Well, I've been thinking about getting a 17HMR for awhile. Had a Ted Williams 30-30 (basically a model 94 rebranded for sears). Was in nice shape, but not collectable like a pre '64 model 94. Buddy had a Savage 93R with a Nikon 3-9x40 on top. It was basically new with 6 rounds out of the box. So we traded...

My initial sighting in was impressive. Using A-17 ammo, I had 5 shots basically in one hole at 50yrds. Just a hare over 1/4" group.

Cleaning, well, I had to get a 17 cal rod, as obviously my 22cal rod wouldn't fit. But the issue was trying to get a patch small enough to fit the rod and the barrel. Well, did a little homework online, and found out that if you cut the head off a q-tip, leaving a 1/4" of the shaft, it will screw into the end of the rod nicely, and the q-tip squeezes perfectly into the 17's barrel. Makes cleaning a snap.

Can't wait to do a little squirrel management soon.

Anyone thinking of getting one, do it. Fantastic round.

My gun club only has a 100yd range. At 200 yards the winddrift on a little .17 grain pill would be substantial with just a slight crossbreeze. But I'm confident this gun/ ammo combo will produce 1 MOA and under. At 100 yards.

I have a couple of them and they are both tack drivers. Looking to get a handgun in the same caliber.

Cool, can you come by and take care of this annoying Blue Jay that seems to have a love/hate relationship with his reflection in my Living Room window! :helpsmilie:

Get yourself a T/C Contender frame, and a 12" barrel for that little beauty! nojoke
I've got a 22 K-Hornet that consistently gives me 1.25" groups at 200 yards.

My reason for suggesting the Contender frame: the trigger is adjustable down to some pretty sweet settings. My current handcannon (.375 JDJ) breaks like glass, at 31 ounces...

Could be a bit hard on the window.... Nah, it flies to the side fence when I wave it away, so we can get a clear shot there!

I have not seen that. Post up pictures! I have both a 22Mag and a 5.7mm handgun, but never saw a .17. Looking forward to seeing one!
That Savage is sweet! They do make great guns.

A 17 HMR is a necked down 22 mag case.

A 17 HM2 is a necked down 22 LR.

17 on left, 22 mag on right.

I think I saw a Taurus Tracker revolver in.17, I bet it is a speedy, if lightweight, round. and should be excellent on little critters and paper.

Ive been wanting one for years. As well as a 5.7 handgun. The only thing that keeps me from buy a .17 HMR is that its rim fire and that the cost of the ammo.

Ammo is prevalent in my area, and cheaper than 22 mag. I got 200 rounds of A17 for $45.00 at Walmart.

I also want a 5.7 However the cost of that ammo is outrageous, not to mention scarce.

Yeah, when I decide to get a 5.7 a reloader with have to be with it. I have been looking at the Dillon 650xl. Can reload anything on that rig.

HIJACK!!!
Well, not really a hijack, just a variation................

I have been wanting to latch onto an older 12 gauge side by side for quite a while and final latched onto one a few days ago. A Stevens 311A, modified and full. The action is tight and after a bit of cleaning and light lubrication, works excellently.

The bluing is 95% gone from the metal, which required a bit of rubbing with gun oil and 0000 steel wool and resulted in a really nice (IMHO) browning/white patina with surprise, surprise, no pitting. The previous owner had slobbered polyurethane over the wood, leaving it an ugly mess. A couple of hours rubbing with steel wool and tack cloths and some tung oil to finish it off, and the rich walnut is showing again but without the shininess. (Still have the foreend to finish.)

The chokes are what they are, and with mod. and full, I'll definitely have to improve my shooting at the clays if I want to score well. Hope the weather is good to pattern it tomorrow.

Yeh, yeh, I know. When the foreend is done! Have patience........................

It's snowing here at the moment, so I guess I'll change my plan to harvest another deer with the flintlock until Monday.

Bob, depending on the make/grain, 2375 +

The A17 ammo is 2650. Not sure who claims the trophy for fastest 17hmr.
