Bob,
The black background is the way the computer or device tells you that the GIF file you are using has a transparent background.
I'm on iphone 7 too and the image gets cut off to a square by FOBO. Your images are not square, they are rectangular.
GIF files can be edited using image editors such as Photoshop or in my case CorelDraw or CorelPhoto. All there is to do is change the size of the background to a perfect square (see screenshot attached) and then save the file as a GIF with transparency again. Don't flatten it or save it as a JPG so you won't loose your transparent background.

OK BINGO! FOBO changed how it works.
So I had my image set long ago and have not changed it in a long time. When upgrading the FOBO APP the image stayed OK and not cut off. So I decided to load one of my other images just now. BINGO I see it. There is now a box to move the image around in before you click "use".
So FOBO changed how this works... People that had older version and upgraded had no problem as the older version scaled it. This new version does not work the same and thus problem.
In fact I think this is BUG because if you notice you can PINCH the image with 2 fingers and resize it to fit in the box. THAT does not work as when you LET GO it re-enlarges. So they have bug in their PINCH TO SCALE on that screen. You should be able to scale it to fit in the box. Try it and see..
OK I have some work to do and fix all the images I made (like 20 of them).
Stay tuned I will fix them all and update the download. Give me a few days to get the time.
Oh and THANK you for finding the problem. I was going nuts there for a while wondering WTH.....

LOL I found work around but even this has a BUG! You need 3 fingers.
So use 2 fingers and pinch the image to make it smaller and fit in the box. Then using a 3rd finger while HOLDING the pinch to fit in the box, tap the "use".
This works but the scaling is whacked out. The Spyder looks pudgy...
I am going to contact FOBO about this issue as it use to work properly. They have always been good about fixing things. This will save me from having to redo all the images I made. Also if they fix it later, now the images I redid my break again and I would have to fix them yet again.
I hate bugs!

By the way. All these images I made long ago were scaled and sized to the same size as the STOCK FOBO images they used at the time (I ripped them from the .ipa file). So they broke the software.

Last thing... Can someone on Android tell me if this same problem exists? Per my above post about pinching to fit in the box?
Thanks,
Bob

It's a little different and specific on Android. It took me a bit to figure it out. You have to drag the cropping box itself to one of the bottom corners of the image FIRST and hold it, then grab the opposite top corner of the cropping box and stretch the "cropping box" to the max to outline the entire image but I was able to finally get it done and it looks fine.
