    Question What IS This

2016 RT Limited with about 2500 miles on her. Accelerating out of a slow turn from an off ramp onto local highway, felt and a pretty significant "clunk" (like a rock had been kicked up and hit something on the bottom of the bike). Yes, there was a bit of debris in the corner, but I thought I had cleared it before I gave her gas. Home is only about 2 miles away, so took a mirror to the bottom of the bike to see if I could see what caused the noise -- and I find this:

    SpyderBeltShaft.jpg

Note that this was take from the left side of the bike and the image is sort of reversed because the phone is sitting on the floor. The arrow points to the front of the bike and you can see the front of the belt, the front pulley, and bolt that holds the pulley on. But, what on earth is that splined shaft that I have circled? This is only the second time I have inspected this area of the bike and just don't recall seeing this bare shaft. Have I lost something? Is that what I heard / felt as it left the bike?

    Concerned in Texas .... Ann

Can you shift gears? Looks like you lost your shift linkage.

Yes, shifts just fine and even goes into reverse. This is an SE6 (as a limited) and I remember there being some external linkage on the 998 SE5's that one had to check of the bike ever got stuck in gear. The 1330 is a different motor with a different clutch, so just not sure what I am supposed to see here.

    Thanks .... Ann

I never cease to be amazed at the lengths that members go to, to help others out. I have belonged to a large number of owners groups over the years, and this is by far the most helpful and responsive. Take a bow, Joe.........and everyone else ........

.....and Trikermutha, who responded while I was typing this

That's good to know. I was wondering how you got home without shifting. Back to the original question, what made that noise?

    Default Noise

My guess is that the noise was caused by a rock getting kicked into the rear wheel or rear sprocket -- belt looks fine, so no damage there (whew).

Thanks for the response .... Ann

    Default Interesting. ...

Shifting on the se is internal. Guess they left the shaft so when your stuck in gear you can grab the shift shaft and get out of gear.....
