i really don't think it will become competition for the spyder, us folks that ride spyders are still bike people and not sports care people. i myself would love to own a slingshot only because i never owned a sports car. but the spyder i think feels more like a bike that that would.

As I see it..!!
the spyders will be compared to anything with threewheels motorized or not one in front two in back and visa versa or three in a row. Nothing compares to the spyder especially if the claim is they have three wheels... there are some fine cool looking machines popping up and I give credit where credit is due...

In my opinion
The Sling Shot is not going to be straight up competition. It will attract it's share of business though. If I had the money and space to store it(I do NOT), I'd have one as well as my Spyder. Every time I see one, it brings back memories of my go cart I had as a kid. I always wanted to drive it down the street. IMO, the Sling Shot is just that- a street legal go cart; except in Texas, etc.

It'll take a few Spyder owners away, but it is a completely different animal. I agree it's more car like than motorcycle like. I think it will probably be a popular item, just not a "motorcycle" replacement.

You're right, and it seems that those people are more of the "look at me" types who probably got into Spyders because they were different and attracted attention.

Are we still batting this around ?
The Slingshot is a different vehicle.
It's stiff competition for the Morgan and the TRex for sure.
But not the Spyder.
I hope to see one Saturday at the NY Motorcycle Show
Just my humble opinion. I could be wrong, and I'm sure someone will let me know if I am.
If it ain't broke, don't break it.

Could be compitition for the Spyder
Not in Texas anyway.......

Is it competition? Put yer thinkin' caps on, folks...
OF COURSE IT IS!
It's competition for the consumer's greenback dollar, in the sport/recreation/fun riding field. It's competition for the finite pool of dollars available for _________ (fill in the blank: fun machines of all sorts), and it WILL take some of those dollars, even if they sell only ONE unit.
Green stuff... that's what all the manufacturers are competing for.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact they call this a motorcycle?
I've seen one, think they are cool, would love to take one for a rip...
In my eyes it's a 3 wheel roofless car.
-
They've got to call it something... ![don't know](images/smilies/shrug.gif)
I guess that it fits the legal definition of "motorcycle"; better than anything else...

Whether or not Slingshots are in direct competition with Spyders remains a question.
Exactly! The Slingshot is transportation. So anyone looking to spend money on transportation has yet one more option. Then you narrow it down to someone looking for no top (ever) no AC, no storage, helmet requirements (in most states), etc., then MAYBE the Slingshot and the Spyder are still in the running.
So you whittle this block of cheese down to where just a very few vehicles are being considered and in MOST cases, either the Spyder or the Slingshot have already been eliminated simply because they are completely different machines.
Bottom line. Someone who buys a Slingshot was not all that thrilled with the Spyder to begin with. And someone who buys a Spyder was probably not a good prospect for the Slingshot anyway.
Will the Slingshot take away sales from the Spyder? Probably. Will the Slingshot's impact on the Spyder be anything significant or even detectable?
No.

I'm guessing 99.9% of two wheel owners (and most car owners) think the Spyder is a snowmobile with wheels and shouldn't be called a motorcycle either. You get laughed at just as much a I do.
You all should be welcoming the Slingshot to the island of misfit toys, and we all can get laughed at together......

missouriboy never used the word significant.

I kinda look at the Slingshot as a sports version of the Eilo. Looks like fun, could be cool to take out, but is basically a auto rather than a motorcycle.
Which doesn't mean I wouldn't want a Slingshot or an Eilo if I should happen to end up with one. But it's a different niche for me than the Spyder.
2012 RT-S5, Quantum Blue, "Bitsy". Just starting out. ![](http://www.spyderlovers.com/forums/signaturepics/sigpic12871_4.gif)
