Hobby?
This "hobby" issue is a red herring. Owning a boat or a yacht or an airplane or a sportscar are also "hobbies" as they are not essential transportation. So what? It is irrelevant. These are expensive machines that operate in and out of traffic. The owners can expect the product to perform reasonably, i.e. to be able to safely and reliably perform their intended purpose. IMHO BRP has reached a crossroad. If they wish the Spyders to have a reputation of reliability BRP will incur the expense to make them all safe and reliable. If they want to be known as a manufacturer of dangerous and unreliable products they will continue to ignore the issues. Its just that simple.

So, I guess there are no
updates to report? I reread the posts because I thought there may actually have been an update reported....

If I paid what they get for these things and had the problems, I would be p.o.ed too. For some, riding is not just a "hobby" either. I am sure there have been many folks who have changed their minds about a purchase.
The 2014 will change your mind. 33,000 miles since February 21, 2014 and not one mechanical issue.

No, I think BRP has at least one more week before they have to turn everything in to NHTSA. If you read the letter from them to BRP it will be a mountain of paper (if printed) for the agency to wade through.

I see that aircraft made the list. The Spyder costs an average of $400/year (sans fuel) for maintenance (3 Spyders and 50K miles), while my airplane will cost me an average of $22K per year, even if I only put 100 hours on it. I don't consider flying a "hobby", since I use it for business, can write it off my taxes, and can avoid all the hassles of commercial flying, and get there as fast (or faster) as commercial airlines.
My Spyder is a hobby.

Guess you didn't read the the quote I was replying to. Maybe you would have figured out why I wrote what I did.

seriously people, what do you think the outcome will be, reverse fans?, new motors?, powder coating everything that gets hot?, a buy back program towards a new bike?, we don't know what it could be until you hear what decision they make. so why beat a dead horse and just wait and see

Hope to see it resolved to everyones satisfaction. My guess is they do nothing more than revised tuning to the ecu via a software update. Maybe a couple heatshields that stick on and a caution decal that if fuel smell is noticed to stop riding immediately and have the dealer work on it.
As for hobby, agree it is for most, and no doubt some use the Spyder as a daily driver.

Just an FYI. There appears to be another burned up RT. A blue 2010 RTS SM5.
Recently this Ebay seller is selling parts from the burned Spyder.
What is interesting is this one doesnt look like it burned completely. Some parts like the radio he is selling are untouched.

But; without knowing the source of the fire...
More information is needed, in order for this one to count for much.

Deadline for BRPs response to NHTSA is tomorrow. Have the truckloads of paper left CA yet?
Will be interesting to see if they actually respond to the demand letter.

True but NHTSA can contact the seller, get the VIN, and contact the owner as to what happened.

i hate to ask this question to go further off the subject, BUT what do you think BRP will do if they can't find a fix, i asked a couple of members last night in PM'S about maybe they might stop selling spyders in the states, so what do you think. lets face it, it will cost them a arm and a leg to do any fix other than a software change. just a thought so please don't attack me for thinking like this

there are other changes that won't cost them an arm and a leg. yes it may cost them money but they do have some deep pockets so I highly doubt they would quit selling here in the USA

it's pretty unlikely that they'd quit their largest market for them...
