Tires....a.g.a.i.n
Some people swear that car tires on Spyders are better. Some people shout that car tires on Spyders are less safe. The discussions go round-and-round.
I do not want to start another round of this never-ending topic.
I read lots of posts in which the poster says they LOVED the improvement of car tires over motorcycle tires. I have not seen any posts in which the poster finds that they disliked car tires on the Spyder. So, my question is: If you had put car tires on your Spyder then changed back to motorcycle tires, please let me know. Please also let me know why you changed back, and the next time you need tires which kind (car or motorcycle) will you use.
I am not interested in a discussion of brands. I am interested in hearing from any of you who had car tires and replaced them with motorcycle tires...

I'm on my second car tire, and I've used 3 stock tires. only reason there was a stock tire between my car tire sets, is cause I was in MO when I needed a new rear. lol I really haven't noticed a difference between the car or stock in handling and stuff like that, but I got 2K less miles out of my first car tire. I'm indifferent towards either the price is really the draw.

Tough one..!!
your going to get into the same thing..always happens. I use the tires that were designed for the vehicle. There must be a reason they designed them...

I hope it doesn't turn into the same old thing. I would really like to hear from someone who went one way then the other...I am interested in hearing some anecdotal evidence from the other "direction" from what is normally offered--sort of a non-scientific learning experience.

This may enter into it...
Some dealers refuse to mount anything other than the BRP-approved Kenda...

My mechanic will instal car on the rear, but not the front. Says that the sidewalls on car tires are not strong enough for the weightof the Spyder's front end.
Is it Friday yet? ... Oh yeah, I forgot. I'm retired

I told him the same thing, and he is a stickler for OEM parts. I think he might have got a bad (cheep) set of tires in the past.

hey Dan I had replied to a post on here a while back about motorcycle tires vs car tires. The end result was that I was ATTACKED and I mean ATTACKED for saying it was not right to mount car tires to a spyder. Like others have said these tires that come on a spyder are designed specifically for this bike. People always complain about the price of tires, I payed 35grand for my 2011rt ltd. Paying 200 dollars for a tire is nothing it comes down for me as what is my life worth, sure I can put a 70 dollar tire on but really all there is between you and the road is a few square inches and I want the best money can buy. I just got a 2014 grand cherokke ltd with a Hemi and it goes like hell, I ordered aftermarket wheels with Yokohama tires 450 a piece just for rubber.....I will feel safe going down the road. Oh and by the way I did get an apology, it was a private apology sent to me but I still am pissed about what was said lol. Sorry to invade your thread I would like to know if anyone switched back to factory tires as well.

This seems very telling...in a learning mode, that is.
So far nobody has admitted to going back to motorcycle tires after installing car tires.
I'm not commenting on safety or design issues. This is just fact finding for me. It is interesting that IT SEEMS once someone decides to mount car tires on their Spyder, they do not later decide to mount motorcycle tires on it.

I admitted it, as I had no choice since I was 2500 miles away from my spare tire. lol but I'm indifferent.

So what on the stock tires makes them "designed" for the Spyder?

...but you were kinda forced into it....
I think (caution--opinion coming up) that it is really saying something when nobody admits to having gone back to MC tires. I actually find that kind of shocking....well, maybe shocking is too dramatic of a word, but a better word escapes me at this moment.

In my opinion (mind you; a buck fifty, and my opinion will get you a cup of coffee), since the Spyder uses flat tires, motorcycle tires are round, so the only reason for car tires is cost savings. Car tires are hard rubber, and motorcycle are soft to hold the turn better. Thus the car tires last longer.

Hang in there Dan. After everyone gives their two cents, you should be able to get those who have done it to weigh in on it. My experience has always been that people who have never done a particular thing, is always an expert on the subject. I'm eager to hear the result as well. If the Spyder leaned like a regular motorcycle, I would be much more concerned, but since it doesn't, and it is a very balanced vehicle, I would been open minded to consider running regular radials (if they were of same size and speed rating).

Do what you want but anyone who put a high quality car tire on will tell you it was a nite and day difference the front end felt more planted and steering was way better plus steel belts mine have been on 3 times more miles than the wore out stockers and still are over 90%. Why would anyone go back to stock? Every new car I have ever had come with the cheepest tires they could roll it out the door with (even a$65000 car) the first set of tires I picked were a big improvement

I will just say I have my 2nd Michelin car tire on the rear on my Spyder, and the first one I got over 26000 miles on it and had no problems at all. I' m sure I could have gotten at least another 3,000 or 4,000 miles on it, but wanted to be ready for this riding season so I had it done in the winter. I have General car tires on the front and have almost about 28,000 miles on them and they look almost brand new still. I will never go back to the stock tires.

Who put these car tires on your Spyder for you?

After 24 posters and 540 viewers, NOBODY has gone back....intestering commentary.
No no judgements here. This is fact finding only...
EDIT: Now 623 views and nobody has gone back!
This is really interesting....

Same story, but now with over 650 views...and the only person who "went back to MC tires" was forced into it--and then only for a short time period. This says a lot about the satisfaction level of car tires over MC tires.
This says something. Even though there some people have a perception that car tires are not as safe, is it an accurate perception? Is there any experience that they are not as safe....YES, I KNOW the theory about contact patch, sticky tires and wet pavement...what I am asking about is experience...some sort of anecdotal evidence...
Anybody got anything on this?????
