Smells funny breaking in
Got to take the new 2014 RT-S for a ride this morning in the Texas Hill Country. Sorry northern guys but it was sunny and 73 degrees. Perfect. Got a good 100 mile loop in going the back way up to Medina Lake Dam over to Park Road 37 and back home.
One thing I've noted as it is breaking in is when I back it into the garage and park it, there is the most unusual new vehicle break in smell I've ever experienced. Not just plastic or metal getting warm for the first time but something else I can't quite put my finger on. Has anyone else noticed this and is it normal for these new Spyders? The 2008 didn't smell like this nor did my BMW.

Mine did that also, Tony.
At first I thought it was the rear brake & rotor but, upon closer sniffing, it seemed to be coming from the muffler.
After several hundred miles it is no longer noticeable.

2014 Break in smell
Could be preservation oils used during the manufacturing phase. Especially since components are made globally now.
My feeble reaction would be to crank it up with the garage door up and run it and give it a sniff over when it's heating up. Don't forget to raise the door for some fresh air. Bet it proves out to be nothing?

Yep,
had the same smell. Suspected the belt rubbing as it smelt like burnt rubber or plastic. Finally took the belt guard off--no rubbing. It is still there. Have only 550 miles on mine.

I heard that the smell was from the manufacturing process like you said and mine went away after a couple thousand miles.

I did smell a little burnt rubber around the belt but that wasn't everything I'm smelling. I'll keep an eye (and a nose) out for it as it continues to break in.
Thanks to all
