Default Sena SMH-10 Firmware Update Ver 5.0 Released

For those who have Sena SMH-10 Intercoms, Firmware version 5.0 has finally been released.

This is "supposed" to allow Sena intercoms to talk to non Sena units. This is the update that I had originally heard was going to be released last December. See link for further details.

I take it this is strictly the SMH-10 and not the SMH-10R respectively?

Wonder when they will have the update for the SMH-10R?

Oh, and anyone know how to get the serial number from the SMH-10R headsets? Don't see it on them.

We have SPH10H units but when I went on the site to try and upgrade I found that this does not apply to our units.. SMH only.

    Default Latest Sena SMH10R Firnware

The latest firmware update for the Sena SMH10R is version 4.3 released on November 10, 2013.

It can be downloaded from their website along with the Sena Bluetooth Device Manager software if your Sena product is registered with them.

I have the same model as you the SPH10H. Support for Sena told me the new firmware 5 would be coming to our model. I was giving him an ear full about the 4.3 version skipping our model.

As mentioned the firmware update is only for the SMH-10.

    firmware_versions.jpg

The new multi-Brand feature is called "UNIVERSAL INTERCOM". Here's some excerpts from the manual.

    17. UNIVERSAL INTERCOM
You can have an intercom conversation with non-Sena Bluetooth
headsets using the Universal Intercom function. Non-Sena Bluetooth
headsets can be connected to the Sena Bluetooth headset if they
support the Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile (HFP)
    . The working
distance may differ depending on the performance of Bluetooth
headset that it is connected to. In general, it is shorter than normal
intercom distance since it uses the Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile.

    17.1 Universal Intercom Pairing
The SMH10 can be paired with non-Sena Bluetooth headsets for
Bluetooth intercom conversation. You can pair the SMH10 with only
    one non-Sena Bluetooth headset
; if you pair with a different non-
Sena Bluetooth headset, the previous pairing list will be removed.

    17.3 Three-way Universal Intercom
You may make a three-way Universal Intercom connection with
two SMH10s and one non-Sena Bluetooth headset. If the intercom
connection is made, all headsets connected cannot use the mobile
    phone call function
since the connection between the headset and
    the phone is disconnected temporarily.

    Default Limited distance

Since Sena is using bluetooth to connect to non Sena headset the usable distance I would guess be 40 or 50 feet. That would make that feature of limited use. It would work well in situations when you are stopped close to each other, intersections, etc.

Since everyone I ride with uses sena I'm more interested in the side tone. This has been something g that has been missing for awhile so you don't find yourself screaming!

Why would you say that? Sena shows a range of 900 meters which may be stretching it a bit but Louise and I have no trouble at half a mile or so with our SMH10R Bluetooth headsets.

Its actually using the Phone Hands free Profile. Not sure how far you can be from your phone before dropping the connection but its considerably less than normal intercom distances.

That's correct. Bluetooth doesn't go nearly as far. 50ft is probably about it. But useful. You could actually talk to someone on a plain BlueTooth handsfree headset using this.

Sena, Scala and other major headsets do not use BT to connect to each other. The range you quoted is right for the technology that Sena actually uses. But because of different proprietary technologies different brands cannot talk to each other. Sena is trying to get around that by connecting to other brands of headsets using BT. BT has strict universal standard and all BT devices should be able to connect to each other. Your result my vary!! But as I said the range is limited. I think what Sena has done is a good idea but I think that folks should know what the limitations are.

This is one of the things I like about Sena. Other manufacturers aren't constantly improving the software for their current customers. They would rather just sell you a new device. I really like the jog dial of the SMH10, and I hope to have this one for a long time; as I have no complaints with it.

I tried updating my SMH10 last night but couldn't get it in the mode for the utility to function..

I did what they say, hold the jog and phone buttons but the only way i could get the SMH10 to flash 'violet' (a combination of the red and blue lights flashing together) was to press the buttons separately....

if anyone has had success in doing the upgrade, what am I doing wrong?

Did you try rebooting your machine, and then restart the the Sena app? And it's a simultaneous push of the jog dial and phone button and hold for a few seconds.

After that then it's Customer Service time.

I upgraded both of ours without problem. IIRC, the lights go red then as you continue to hold them it goes to the blue/red.

Default updated firmware, performace seems worse

I updated the firmware on both my wife and I smh-10's and I have to say after riding and using them today. I don't like the intercom performace now, ours seems to be less range and getting alot of crackling and breaking up that we never got before. I did notice when close to each other, ie stop lights etc. there is absolutely no noise, very clear almost as if turned off however if this performace is how they work after the firmware I think I'd rather go back to the previous version.
Anyone else have any feedback using the intercom feature post firmware upgrade?

Upgraded firmware yesterday. Did walk test with wife and all seemed well. Distance between us was about 1/2 mile with trees/hill between us. Voice transmission was very clear and easily understood. Will do riding test as weather permits.
