My dealer said varying speed and gears first 1000km. Shift above down above 4000 and up at 5000 RPM and don't judge until you have riden it at least 1000 miles. He was right on all counts.
-
You can always do what I did , a burnout right in front of the dealer. Just kidding, but it burn the tire all first gear. It must be the shipping compound on the tire.

For my 2010 it said:
Page 44-45 of Owners Manual / Operators Guide
"during first 200 miles avoid hard braking"
during the first 600 miles,
Avoid full throtle acceleration.
Avoid prolonged riding.
"If the cooling fan operates continuously during stop and
go traffic, pull over and shut off the engine to let it cool off
or speed up to let air cool off the engine."
also read the warning at top of page 45.

On my defence, I didn't brake.

I don't know where you are getting your spyder from, however, when I bought mine down in Kissimmee, I took 192 to 27 then 27 to 19 and picked up 10 just east of Tally. That way I did vary the speed for the first 250 miles of my trip and then put it in cruise at 72 once on the highway for the trip to pcola

I like this guy. He has built a lot of engines and his method works every time. But he still gets a lot of grief.

I always run them hard from the get go, If it's gonna break let it when its new and under warranty.
-
Oh Ed, why don't you just ask us which octane fuel to use?
-
Didn't baby mine at all and almost 10K later getting 150miles on just over 4 gallons, very minimal oil consumption (about half a quart on 2K miles) and no problems (2010 RS SM).
Don't thrash it but give it a good workout.

Hard break in and warranty
I have read this thread with keen interest since I appear to be getting a new engine in my bike. If I use this break in method and I blow another engine, is there diagnostic information that would show it and subsequently void my warranty? 'm a little gun shy now as you can imagine....

BUDS gives the tech a graph, with the percentage of operation spent at each rpm range, the average rpm, and the maximum rpm. Every time they hook up to BUDS they see it. If you have been on the rev limiter, they will know.

Buds RPM on our 08
On our 08, at Daytona I was having issues with the GPS (gear position sensor), at high rpms in first gear the neutal and reverse lights would flash back and forth. So the rep., reset it for me and then he look at the RPM chart to see how I was driving it. He said there was something wrong with my BUDS, because the machine show that I was running in all RPM ranges 100% of the time, So the 08 is very great machine, it can run at minimum and at maximum all the time.

I recommend going with what the owners manual recommends. For me, better safe than sorry. The recommendatins to beat it, or be hard on it scare me and I would never do so. We have had mixed reviews on driving at the red line all the time. I will say no more because I don't want to get beat up today.

I've spouted off on this subject before, so I will refrain from getting on my soapbox. Let me just say that this is not your grandfather's Model A, or your father's 1966 Dodge Charger. Break-in needs and methods have changed radically over time. Unfortunately, people's thoughts on the subject seem to have lagged behind.

Here is my method.
As you can see from my gps log, I probably would not be rated as one of those who believes taking it easy on a motor is the right way... These are actual mileage logs from my new Spyder taken this week. First 5 miles was a tad slow as I had to figure out how NOT to use a cluch and get used to the SE5 tranny. By mile 6 all was good

I bought mine used. It had 550 miles and 27 hours on it. That works out to an average of 20 miles per hour. It ran like crap. After driving it correctly for a 1,000 miles or so it runs much better. So my point is drive it like you stole it revs up to 9000 rpm is good for it.
