Passing it on- Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) Update

DPS went crazy last Friday night. Just picked it up from the dealer after having the 12,000 mile checkup. I took it for approx. 140 mile spin. Heading home it's after dark and raining and I'm about 90 miles from home when sh**t happens. I have just put 185 -60-14 Bridgestones on the front and at first thought that the new tires were transmitting a different feel and I couldn't possibly be a victim of the dreaded DPS syndrome. The problem got progressively worse until the only thing I could do to keep the steering from locking up was to constantly move the hand grips back and forth and keep the front tires from staying in any one position for more than a second or two. Saturday A.M. I loaded it in the trailer and dropped it off at the SK Northwest in Portland. Service Manager said that according to their records the first recall action for the DPS was done July 09 and my unit wasn't listed for the second recall but they will do what ever it takes to fix the problem. From what I have just read from Lamoster the second recall should have already been perfomed on my unit.
Ever since I bought my spyder I have been reading about owners having DPS problems and kept wondering when my luck would run out. I'm glad it happened close to home and not when I have the wife out on a tour.

Rode mine about as hard as I ever have today on some really crappy roads at 2x the speed limit-- literally beat the crap outta it... no steering problems at all. If it can take what I did to it today--- I'm more than confident it's working right....

Unfortunately my escort 8500x50 took a pavement bounce and ended up 30 feet from the road... scratched up but still works....

I think the DPS problems are quietly going away. Not that no one is having DPS issues anymore but they seem to be fading quite a bit.

My feeling is that this is how BRP wants it to go. If they issue another "Update" it will just tend to stir it all up again. And if it isn't needed then why bother?

Problems aren't going away but nothing new to say and everytime somebody posts concerns they get jumped on

Sorry to hear of your incident, glad there were not more severe consequences. It's unfortunate that BRP STILL won't be proactive about the DPS issues, after all, they publicly acknowledged the problem a year ago.........Why do Spyder riders still need to be placed in a dangerous position by BRP? Please report your incident on the NHSTA website, there have been many new reports filed there lately, maybe they'll make BRP get honest, if our complaints aren't......

I agree with you...they should be more upfront about what they are doing...I think their last communication was in November? They should, from time to time, tell us what they're finding (or not finding)...it just comes down to good customer service...esp. with a lot of people with an issue...

Dynamic Power Steering (DPS) Update
BRP is fully aware of the concerns and opinions expressed by its valued customers and find them essential to our ongoing efforts to improve the quality of our products. We are thankful to all those who have taken the time to give us feedback on their riding experiences, overall product features or reliability.

Since owners started to voice concerns about their DPS units, BRP technicians and engineers have been in the field talking to several of them in order to assess and understand the nature of their complaint. In November, we released a statement letting the owner community know we needed a few more weeks before concluding our investigation. Due to the low number of cases, and the small frequency of occurrence, this investigation has taken more time than initially planned, but rest assured we will inform you as soon as we reach that conclusion.

In the meantime, BRP would like to once again stress that every Spyder owner should have his or her Spyder updated to the latest software that was the subject of the DPS recall in July 2009. And, we cannot stress enough that one should not remove the fuse powering the DPS unit as this can only worsen the situation described in the July DPS recall notice.

We at BRP are sensitive to the frustration some of our most valued and passionate Spyder owners are feeling with this situation. Please be assured that we will keep you and your dealer posted when more information becomes available.

Please remember that this thread was created back in November...it's been hot and cold, so there are large gaps in posts...Lamont told us what he had heard back then...he didn't just recently post something that was old...

Sent in a report tonight. Doubt if it will have any impact. BRP has too many legal beagles in their kennels. I was lucky that there wasn't much traffic and I was able to keep it on pavemant. This could have turned out a lot different.
