Default Motorcycle License Required in Massachusetts ???

Went to car get together with the Spyder. This is the first bike I have owned that no matter where I am for more than an minute attracts attention and questions.

One guy asked if you needed a motorcycle license in Mass to operate the bike. I assumed yes, since we are required to wear helmets and when I get it inspected and registered it is a motorcycle.

One guy who owns a Trike made the statement, If it has 2 wheels in back and 1 in front that is a trike and a motorcycle for license purposes. If it has 2 wheels in front then it is not a motorcycle for driver license purposes and you regular driver license will cover the driving of the Spyder.

I tried to Google, but was unsuccessful in getting an answer.

Anyone know the answer for Massachusetts ???

    Default Motorcycle licens

According the MASSRMV.COM site it states a "Class M - A motorcycle or any other motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the rider and designed to travel with no more than three wheels in contact with the ground."

That tells me you need a Class M motorcycle license for ANY three wheeled vehicle, trike or
    .

    Enjoy the ryde.

I went thru the same link the other night, but I guess I didn't push the right buttons.

    Found this

Class M - A motorcycle or any other motor vehicle having a seat or saddle for the rider and designed to travel with no more than three wheels in contact with the ground.

Guess that guy was wrong based on the Mass Site.

Per BRP's website: yes; you need a motorcycle license in Massachusetts.

In Massachusetts you need a motorcycle license. Or a Trike license which is what my wife just got its a motorcycle license with a restriction stating that it must have 3 wheels.

In Vermont I got my permit, took spyder to get my license, and also got a card saying " Restricted to Riding a three wheel motorcycle only" this is from Vermont Agency of transportation dept. of motor vehicles.

Also, I got "M" for endorsement on my license.

I hate reviving old threads, but I want to officially put this to rest after I had the same questions today.

I called the MA RMV road test Department in Boston (Main Office). They said yes class M is required AND you may use your Spyder for the road test. However, you will end up getting class M endorsement with a "U" which restricts the rider to three wheels.

So for people that never plan on riding two wheels this can work out nicely. If you want to upgrade later, you just pay to take another road test on two wheels.

In Tennessee, you can get a 'Motorcycle' (2 wheel) license qualifying on a Spyder.

You are correct, Tennessee doesn't differentiate between 2 and 3 wheel motorcycles for driver's licenses.

I took a class through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation which provided me a couple of documents upon completion. One was a document to take to the Tennessee BMV. After giving the BMV the document, and them taking an updated picture of me, I received an updated drivers license in the mail in about a week. On the back it says:

Class: DM Vehicles <26,000 (Operator), Motorcycles, motor-driven cycles & scooters

The "D" part is Tennessee's way of indicating a regular, non-commercial driver's license.

If I had not taken the class I would have had to schedule a time to take a driving test on a motorcycle at a BMV facility.
