NY EZ Pass question
I know that in NY you have to get a motorcycle only transponder but you can
only get one when you show proof of registration.
I also know they frown upon moving an automobile transponder to a bike.
Anyone know if they will still work on a bike or are they doing a verification
between transponder and plate?
I am going to St Louis(flying) to get my new bike and obviously want to save
on tolls(Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, PA, and NY) on the way back. Just curious if
anyone has recent experience with car transponders on a spyder. Thanks in
advance.

The transponders are "attached" to a particular plate and vehicle when you sign up for them.

I have a car one. I do not have a bike one and can't get one until after I get back to
NY and register it. I had hoped to get the EZ Pass discounts along the way of my 13 hour
trip back.

Well say about car to bike (I don't do toll roads on bike), but I left Syracuse in 2007 for Las Vegas.
Since being in Las Vegas, I have continued to use my EZ-Pass with my NV plated vehicles. Most recently was June 2015.
I just make sure I keep my account "loaded". Always accepted and never been questioned.
Now if it were me, I'd use the car's pass and just hold it up as I passed gates until I got back.

I think I will go with this. Between the car transponder and probably a pocket full of change in case a gate doesn't feel
like cooperating I should be ok. Thanks for feedback.

I move my transponder freely back and forth between my car and my Spyder. I just added the bike's license plate to my account.
The motorcycle transponder is for if you want a special discounted motorcycle rate plan. Then you have to prove you have a bike and can't move the transponder to a car.
We hashed this out a couple of months ago; search for the thread for the rest of the details.

I will search for it. Thank you. I came here from Chicago and like most other states they don't even have a different transponder for motorcycles.
Heck, there if you have your license plate on the account and go through without a transponder it deducts the ezpass fee without any penalties, etc.
Other states on my route appear to only have auto transponders for ez-pass as well so I am figuring it should all be good.

NY EZ Pass question
Just got following back from EZ-Pass NY:
Yes, you can in fact use your current vehicle’s E-ZPass tag on your motorcycle
as you return home to New York. However, they do recommend that you get a
transponder for the bike once it’s registered.
Will make it easier going through TSA security without rolls of coins...lol.

Actually, the thruway package is cheaper than the bike transponder discounts. Would have thought
a bike should have been cheaper but they won't allow the thruway package with a bike...

EZ PASS in a pinch
I had to take an unexpected Thruway ride last week. I grabbed the EZ Pass from my car that morning and put it in the glove box. I just held it up as I rode through the toll booth. It worked fine.
Nobody's come to take me away yet. But I will be getting one specific for the Spyder soon.

If you currently have a temporary registration then hold off on trying to get a motorcycle transponder until you get your permanent plate.
The motorcycle transponder will also just grant you 50% discount...none of the NY EZ Pass Packages are allowed with a motorcycle transponder.
You CAN use the car transponder until you have the motorcycle one...I went back and forth about 6 times with different answers to that one.

Thanks Roger. I've been wondering about using my EZPass on the Spyder. I think I will pay them a visit today and find out which is best, add my plate to account and use the one from my car, or get a separate one for the Spyder.
