Bob D. .... NYS sales tax....
I didn't want to interfere with Lamont's post.
You just purchased from Lamont. I'm not trying to be nosy; but, did you pay NYS sales tax. Here's why I ask. I was going to purchase from hayneedle.com, patio furniture. It was $500, and 3 months ago I made a purchase thru them, and there was no sales tax. Now, they want 8%, and I called them. They said 2 months ago they added 14 states to their list in which state sales tax must be paid. If you want to P.M. me, go ahead. The company has no presence in NYS; that includes stores or warehouses.

Utah Either has or is working on such a law now. I know I just ordered some oil from out of state and I was charged sales tax for the first time.

Like Cruzr said, more and more states are forcing out of state vendors to collect for them. I think what we'll eventually see is a compromise uniform sales tax level for interstate sales and all vendors will be required to report and pay it to their own state tax commission, and then the tax commissions will forward it to the states of residence of the buyers. Even states like Oregon who don't have a sales tax might get on the bandwagon and rake in out of state sales taxes just to keep the system uniform.

They could get really greedy like the state Maine tried to be when Cabellas came into the state. They wanted them to charge sales tax on ALL their sales including store and internet sales anywhere in the country. Now that is greedy.

Sales Tax
Technically, in most states, you have to pay the tax to the state you live in, when you order online. Iowa calls it Use Tax. There is a form you fill out and file. It is a law that is almost impossible to enforce, since it relies on people self reporting to pay the tax. Spent time on the phone, over the years with Iowa and Minnesota, Dept. of Revenue, this is what I was told. It is convoluted how all of this works, and from a business view some uniformity would be beneficial.

After all the responses, I'll be making the purchase. I was just double checking on the validity of what the company stated.
Thanks
