If you are giving it away with the OS intact, Glary Utilities has a built in file shredder and has a free version.... Otherwise I would use a DOD wipe (ghost utility called Gdisk) on the drive. This of course wipes out EVERYTHING to Department of Defense (DoD) 5220.22-M standard... (read: not even forensics can recover anything). So not an option if you want to give a functioning pc....

    Crude... but effective!

    Mike,
Regarding your reference to a "BFH"; how many different sizes do you have this important tool in?
(I've only got three; but one of them is a three-pounder! )

Our IT guy at the state university where I used to work always recommends Dban when we were recycling obsolete computers. It's a free download and if you run it on a drive, that drive will be completely overwritten as many times as you like according to your choice of methods designed for the purpose.

Office copy machines also have hard drives that should be wiped before you get rid of the copier. Images stay on them a long time.

It seems to me all you need is a little patience, and the drive will wipe itself out.
    They always do.........................
