Gas door add on

I bought a Dodge 6 1/2" black bolt on fuel door on Amazon. Marked the edges of the gas cap on the body panels. Lowered the seat and held the gas door up to were I wanted it an marked the inside and outside frame edges were the bolt holes would be and marked them too. Cut out the seat cover and foam. took my multi tool and cut the seat pan. You need to take all the mounting hardware and decorative nuts and bolts off. When I cut the cover, I only cut to the seam of the stitched in panel to prevent possible tearing. I tool a sheetrock knife and twisted the point thru the seat cover where the six screws would go then drilled thru the pan, being careful to not wrap the cover around the drill.(tip, clean the bit after each hole because the plastic will melt onto the drill and grab the seat cover>BE CAREFUL!!!!) I used black, high temp rv silicon to seal the inside padding then covered that with strips of gorilla tape and on the underside of pan, cover tape with more silicon to help hold it. I made sure to tuck the tape outer edge under the door ring. This cleaned it up.(Tip 2. I would not cut out the seat cover. I would now cut it from the center out in straight lines to the inner edge of the ring on the door and then silicone the padding and then fold the cover strips in over that and attach them to the pan. Still would maybe want to tape those too. I used stainless steel nuts and bolts. I double nutted them and lock and flat washers. You will need 2'' + or - long bolts. cut them off an add some kind of cover over the top nut to protect the body panel. I used some heat shield cloth and silicon to do this. The other ones cleared find but do some dry run slow closing with the door open to check.I'm tech slow and cannot remember how to get pics on here. I have some and hope to post.

I have posted my method previously but glad you were successful.....you were very lucky, using that method. I discovered using a RED HOT nail to make the holes works very well. It seals the seat material and prevents tearing......I also used a large can to create the large hole inside the attachment ring ( just the seat material & padding ) a hole saw will cut the seat pan........I'm planning to do a few at Spyerfest 2016 at a WORKSHOP........Mike

Thanks for the tech lesson. I'm so not teachable! I like the hot nail idea. I cut the pan back further than the seat cover towards the top.

You did fine......Back a few years ago, people were trying this and having difficulty getting past the SEAT MATERIAL problem......The vinyl layer is bonded to a woven mesh of nylon threads this makes the vinyl quite strong......The problem is those nylon threads are so strong drill bits don't cut them they grab them and pull them. This really damages the seat material......I thought up the idea of BURNING through the seat material and bolting the ring one at a time as you go. After that's finished you can use a HOT knife or piece of metal to burn thru the large area inside the ring ....then cut the seat pan with a HOLE SAW etc.........Mike

I'm going to do mine, but I'll probably take the seat to a shop where they do car seats, and have them cut the hole, then I'll tackle the rest! With yours i would cut the rest of the vinyl , make the hole as round as possible then cover the edges with vinyl! Staple or glued it on the inside and pin it in the outside with the rim of the gas door! Maybe Mike has a better solution! He is the expert on this!

Just wondering though, how easy is it to refuel when you're going thru the door with the seat down?

I have a heck of a time with the seat up, trying to fill my tank ('15 RTS)

-Fratz, I can tell ya from using the door on the Ultimate that if you're the kind that throws the nozzle in and pumps till it clicks and remove, the door is no problem. If you want to top it off to the very top/neck then it's a bit tricker since you are looking through the hole and its darker. I tend to use mine just cause it's slightly easier (especially with my phone mounted) and it's there already.

Thanks for turning the pictures The hot nail/burn thru idea is a good one. I wonder how a soldering gun would work? Not an iron. I read in a post about the door getting hot on the leg. With the BRP heat fix I'm hoping this is not an issue, but I hope also the material I left may help and I kept the cut out material to make a small patch to put on if needed. Gorilla tape and silicon are a DIYer staple! if it does not last I'll modify more. I used the door once and I have good size hands. works good. A little dark but ok.

Yes the soldering iron will work if you are just melting the VINYL seat material .....after that is done you can use a drill for the hole because the NYLON THREADS are melted also.!!!!!!......And the gas door itself is well insulated from any heat from the GAS CAP area.....The only heat issue might be from the sun and wearing ....SHORTS .......Mike

Someone had a post where they had cut out the seat and put a nice hinge on opening. Does anyone know where to find that post?
I ended up taking my seat to an auto upholstery shop. I described what I wanted and he did a pretty good job - although he had a tough time finding the correct hinge. He originally did it without the hinge by just cutting the inside plastic where the flap folded back. I almost wish I would have just left it like that. He had to cut thee whole piece on the outside to add the hinge. I'm happy with the results and gas fillup is easy now.

What I remember from that thread was "can you spot the difference" or something like that. Was good thread & they basically cut out part of the seat frame covering the cap left enough cloth material Velcro close over the cap & end result was very clean (Hope this is the one you are talking about

What ever method you use, post the results with pics. We all like to see different stuff. I learned some tricks to do if I do another one like mine but your choice may suit another rider better. I've found when you do something like this others who ride with you want you to do their ride.
