If you're on the road: there's not much that you can do...
Shut it off, whenever you have a chance to let it cool down, coast along in neutral (or with the clutch pulled-in) whenever possible, and check your coolant level at the first opportunity that you have.
Good Luck!

If it was really hot out (120+ on your Spyder's thermometer) you may be experiencing the "intake air temperature too high" error P0127 and P0217. Getting up to speed and getting some airflow will normally clear this condition.

On my 2008 GS I would always have that problem in stop and go traffic in Arizona
I found an aftermarket radiator fan controller at an auto parts store
It was not expensive
It had a tempeture probe the went inbetween the radiator fins
And an adjustment for the temp the fan came on
I wired it in line with the original fan but after thre original temp switch so the original would work the fan incase this one failed
I set the temp so the fan would come on at three bars
It does not make bike run any cooler but in stop and go traffic the fan comes on sooner so it would take a lot longer for it to heat up to limp mode
Never had any problems after that

My wife also has a 2008 GS. She has ridden in parades, stop & go traffic, etc. during 100 degree Texas summers and never had an overheating problem. I think you have something going on. Maybe low coolant, old coolant, empty/cracked reservoir? I can't say what the problem might be, but, although they are helpful, you shouldn't have to add aftermarket parts to fix the problem. Good luck and be safe.

Depends....
If the engine temp (on the gauge) goes up to the overheated area then you need to check all the areas mentioned above. But, if the engine maintains its temp and you simple get the limp home mode you are getting too much heat at the intake which clears as soon as you can get some air flow. I have had days wherer the asphalt in my driveway gets to over 170° add the engine heat to that and but hey...no motorcyle is happy in stop and go traffic or even a parade....

Got up this morning and started to check the items above, turns out the top return hose stem on the fill bottle has a hairline crack. Hence lack of pressure in system. No one around the DC area or my dealer has the part on stock. Called Pitt Bull Power Sports as a last resort and Steve in parts had the tank. He went out of his way to ship it to me (on a Saturday) the fastest way he could, USPS overnight. I should have the tank Monday morning. Big shout out to follow. The Marriott extented to me the 911 ride room rate for 2 additional nights and allowed me to leave the bike at the front entance for free. It is amazing how kind and accommodating people can be especially when you are out of the New York Tri State area. I'll keep you all post and thanks for the knowledgable responses. It could have been worse........I could have gotten sick instead of my spyder.
