    Default Munted

Well that's one of my favourite "just nipping out" rides munted, probably for good:-( I know you shouldn't really mourn a road but I have a lot of good memories tied up with that bit of highway. There's not many highways in the world where you can pull over to watch seal pups playing at the side of the road or penguins diving into the sea. Add to that some lovely tight technical bends, two tunnels to reflect the exhaust noise and some fantastic views of both the sea and snow capped mountains.

PS One big advantage of Spyders that no one has mentioned before - they can't fall off their side stands during earthquakes:-)

The PM said in an interview when asked "If you just take a look at the size of the slips that have taken place, the mountain's literally moved forward and you can't see the road, so that just tells you there's thousands of tonnes of debris. Now, what you do with it and where you go, that's for the technical engineers to decide."

    i.e. dodging answering that one.

If I am remembering the right road, from 40 years ago, it is/was magic - mountains with a dusting of snow on one hand, the ocean on the other

i don't remember all roads 40 years on, but this one was so wonderful the images and feeling stayed with me.

Really hope they can fix it

Even if they plan to rebuild the road, I expect it will take some time.

    Default Yikes...!!

Have seen this too many times and in two continents. Hope you fared well through all the quakes. That is a lot of earth to move but hope they will rebuild. Fred Rau takes bike tours overthere and that may be one of the routes taken...all the best to all over there. Daughter is on her way to New Plymouth for a tattoo convention as we speak but has already had cancelations but is looking forward to visiting anyway. be safe over there

Default That is a little scary....

...when you think about what has happened to the mountain, the road, the land.... it certainly looks like an enchanted place - VERY different from my land here in Northern Indiana!! Hope everyone was safe!!

Just to mention Sue and Dan, the two Spyder riders from the US who are currently touring around New Zealand, are safe and well. They had been in Kaikoura (the epicenter) a few days earlier but had fortunately moved on from there.

Yes that's definitely the one - it is the sort of road that you remember. Fortunately I did ride it a couple of times last month. On the second occasion it was early evening, the light was perfect and there were no other vehicles so I slowed right down to enjoy the views. Don't normally do the 'smell the roses' thing so thankful I did on that occasion.

It's a very common term in the New Zealand Insurance industry:-)

    Munted
adj (1) used to describe severe levels of damage in an earthquake
    (2) used to avoid offending others by saying f**k*d in the context above...

Origin, Christchurch NZ Sept 2010 earthquake but became widespread when used by the Christchurch mayor after Feb 2011 one

We're all good though that was the strongest we've had where we live. We also had to evacuate because the Tsunami sirens went off so ended up spending the night sitting on a hill which just made sure sleep wasn't an option that night:-)

If Fred does bike tours of the South Island then that road would definitely been part of the route - It's in a number of motorcycle touring books including the Twisted Thottle book.

That's right the tattoo conversation is the weekend after next. Fortunately that area was unaffected by the shakes but I suspect anyone who was travelling up from the South Island via the ferry is going to be stuck as the ferry's have been cancelled at the moment. That's probably why she's had some cancellations.

With all that damage they most likely will never find who was responsible. If it was in the USA I am sure that they would say that it was Bush's fault.

    That's just terrible:-)

So far the more outlandish theories have been:
    • The moon - the logic is it causes tides so must impact the earths crust as well.
    • Fracking - However though planning consent was given for limited fracking they haven't actually started yet.
    • New Zealand passing the gay marriage bill in 2013.

Personally I blame our prime minister John Key, after all these only started after he came to power:-)

Weeeelll, we have just had a 'SuperMoon', when the Moon was at it's closest to the Earth since about 1948! Could be something in that...
