    Default Gear mesh noise when cold

    I hear a gear mesh noise at all times while rolling for the first 5 minutes of riding now that it is cold. I have a 2008 gs sm5. I hear it with the clutch in and out and while I apply the brakes. It stays constant. Once I am warm, it's gone or very very minimal. Thoughts? The noise is more of a transmission sound rather than grinding. Almost like the way a city bus transmission sounds. I can hear it in neutral as well While rolling. It's stops when I quit rolling. I can't hear anything while rolling the bike while it is not running. Only when moving and changes tone with speed. Then it just disappears when warm.

    Does your bike make the same noise if it's moving, and is in neutral?
    (Try giving it a push in your driveway...)

    I would start checking the front pulley for the correct torque, belt alignment and tension. Then the rear wheel berings and output shaft berings. This after you check oil level and condition . If not around there it may even internal...

    I rolled the bike today while off and in neutral. The noise is a tram-type noise coming from the left part of the bike. It almost sounds like it is the belt drive pulley. I get the noise with the clutch in and out and while coasting as the belt turns. It's the for sure the belt area. Once I have 2 heat bars on the engine temp gauge, the sound goes away. Is it safe to ride like this? For how many miles? Thoughts on cost or what I should say for them to diagnose and fix this? Trying to think if the dealer will want it overnight so they can hear the sound in the morning when cold. Thanks guys!

    Could it just be the sound of a cold belt, as it rolls around the sprocket?
    Or is it more of a "metal to metal" sound?

    It's more of a tram noise with a little bit of squeak to it. I will record in tonight. If someone would be so king, I can text them the video. This started happening as soon as it got a little cooler out.

    Default Pea-sized grease on finger

    I tried the pea-sized amount of grease in two areas on the rear sprocket and this worked! No more noise. Can't believe no one shared this gem of a trick with me! How often are you guys doing this?

    Yes, a very quick fix and is back to perfect. I hope other members find this tip quicker than I did.
