Spare key finally
Still waiting on my 2 keys I ordered at a really good price. In the meantime I ordered a single key from e bay. Carried it to the local hardware and had them cut it for me. Phase one done. Found a Ace Hardware about a hour away said they would see if they could do it. Jumped on the Spyder and made it to the store. Walked in and about 2 minutes later key done and working with no charge. Going to let them do the other 2 when they arrive. Said they would cut them and clone for a $1.00 per key. Great place and friendly people there.

Not undestanding this process
I am assuming you are saying that you can get a key with a blank chip in it from ebay and take it to a hardware store and have it programed for the spyder, that you insert to the keyhole and it will start the bike for $1.00 ... if this is the case, then why does it cost so much from BRP?
I love how the earth rotates around the sun ... it really makes my day!

Since your bikes are pre-2014: you are correct.n
Buy a keyblank that has the proper chip in it, get it cut to fit your ignition switch, and then take it to a locksmith who can clone the programming from your existing key.

Like Bob stated. Mine is a 08 model. The dealer wanted $75.00 plus $70.00 to program plus tax. I would also have to carry it to a place to cut it for me. The dealer doesn't cut the key. Total price in this key is $22.00. My local hardware store cut mine for free and the Ace Hardware cloned it for free.

No offense Dave but $45 is nuts! I got 3 made (Cut and programmed) for free at Ace Hardware per my video!
Most Ace Hardware stores will cut and program for free unless you buy the blanks from them which they do not have for the Spyder 2008-2013.

The Ace that cloned mine is going to charge me a dollar a key to cut and clone them. Gladly will pay that.

Key blanks for the 2014 and later are different and not interchangeable . Must be purchased and programmed at your dealer. It can be cut anywhere but must be programmed at your dealer. Total cost for purchase, cutting and programing at my dealer was $50.00.
When buying or ordering be specific about year of Spyder.

As near as I could figure: the pre-2014 bikes used a TP-5 chip, and the newer bikes used a TP-12...
I bought a TP-12 chip, and gave it a try... BUDS wouldn't recognize it.
Of course BUDS would not recognize it. The uncloned chip has no codes to transmit. There is nothing that a dealer using BUDS can do with it. That's like putting a blank CD in a music player and being surprised that no music comes out. As I tried to explain at the time. You needed to take your cloneable key and the whole Spyder to a locksmith with the correct equipment to clone that kind of chip.

Any service dealer with Buds can program the keys. Not just dealers. I have done several for our customers.
