Elio commercial.
With all the hype about these vehicles, I've never seen a single commercial about them until today. Well actually 7-27, as I was watching a show I DVR'ed, and was watching today.
There still claiming 80+ mpg's and a $6800 price tag.
So what's the "current" delivery date? And how long have these been delayed?. Really hope those that invested get more then a tee shirt.

There was a test drive clip on Yahoo the other day. 20 minutes worth, and being driven in downtown New York City.
Of course, I cannot find the link now.
The testers were from a motorcycle magazine. They apologized for the terrible performance of the Elio at least four times. "It's a prototype and is not properly set up."
Noisy, no windows installed, the transmission was "wonky," and the gauges were non-functional. At the end, the left front fender came loose and the vehicle stopped in the middle of the driving lane with the wheel on top of the fender--Oooooops!
I thought to myself, what a POS. With about a year to get the vehicle in full production and get the "bugs" worked out--I am sure glad I don't have any pre-ordered or any money down. On a scale of 1 to 10--I would give it a 1 for starters.
Time will tell--
They are saying late 2017. They now have one running prototype (above). I would not hold my breath, nor would I jump on the bandwagon to own one.

Oh, I agree. I can't believe this is the first commerical I've seen. Seems like there targeting different areas each yr to get as much money as possible. Hope I'm wrong.

I'm still thinking that this is WAY to visible to be a deliberate scam.
I'm reminded of the Tucker.

I have seen the Elio ads about a half dozen times. They are on the cable channels that I don't watch very often.

Hi Cindy!
Don't you think that the correct phrasing for that sentence should be, "I think we gonna get one IF its out "?

Well let's compare the $6800 Elio to a lawn mower I'm looking at the Kubota vs Elio.
Vehicle |
Price |
A/C? |
Mower Width |
In Production? |
Kubota ZD1211-60 |
$15,723 |
NO |
60 inch |
yes |
Kubota Z125SKH-54 |
$6,323 |
NO |
54 inch |
yes |
Elio |
$6,800 |
YES |
N/A |
no |
|
|
|
|
|
From the above chart the premium Kubota ZD1211-60 is clearly out of the running.
The Kubota Z125SKH is almost $500 below the Elio but doesn't have a/c.
The Elio looks good but as yet doesn't appear to have a mower attachment and it's not currently being produced in anything but prototypes.
I guess I'll go with Kubota.

Humm, this is embarrassing. I watched the video and then selected another one to watch.
The second one was from 'Engineering Explained.' This young guy is a straight shooter. Watch his video explaining the advantages of a CVT.
This vid was published July 5, 2015. So, not current. But, the dang thing is real and looked pretty good!
Will it sell for $6,800? No, I don't think so.
Will it be ready for LIMITED production in late 2017? That's one heck of a challenge.
But, I no longer think it is VAPORWARE like the Dale.

I don't think Elio is a "scam", per se - I truly believe they are really trying their best to bring this vehicle to market. That said, it takes a LOT of money to bring a car from concept to a product you can go out and buy. Most folks without really deep pockets or backers with lots of funding have failed - and even some of the folks who had the money, failed.
I hope they are successful - there is certainly a market for the Elio - college students, young people starting out in the working world - a second car for some families that would like two cars but can't quite afford a second, and just plain old penurious folks who will drive the cheapest vehicle to own and operate that they can get!

New price just announced.
We knew this was coming, but here is the "new" pricing information.
"Elio Motors is hoping to shake up the auto industry with Elio, its three-wheeled "car" that can achieve 84 mpg, thanks to its small footprint and simple design. It's not for everybody, but it could make city driving much easier. It's also making car ownership cheaper, as it costs as little as $7,000, although there are some catches involved.
Elio says it's "locking in" its prices for different levels of reservation holders. If you put down a non-refundable deposit, the price will be set at $7,300. If you make a "binding commitment," as Elio calls it, the price drops to $7,000.
To agree to that binding commitment, you have to sign a special form that says you will purchase the vehicle regardless of when it actually goes on sale. There's no special benefit for refundable depositors. You'll receive your car in a specific order, based on what type of deposit you've made and how much it is.
The reasoning for this convoluted pricing setup is simple: government loans. Elio's applying for the US Department of Energy's Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) loan program. To be eligible for an ATVM loan, you have to have more than just a bunch of non-binding reservations. Thus, Elio can't get that sweet green unless it ramps up the number of reservation holders that agree to actually purchase the thing.
There's another catch, too. This deal is only good until Elio reaches a combined 65,000 reservations from all different tiers. The company is about 10,000 shy of that number right now, and the site does not mention what the price will rise to once this offer ends.
I reached out to Elio to see how much it'll cost for someone who places the absolute minimum, refundable deposit, but have not heard back yet. The site's purchasing process is on the complicated side. It's easy to see how much your deposit will be, but full prices are conspicuously absent."

As soon as I can walk into a dealership, and buy one on the spot: I'll be more than happy to pay $13,000 for one!
