At the metro station, I park my bike in a motorcycle parking. Parking for the motorcycles are free, and I do have motorcycle plates. In shopping centers, I park in a regular parking.

I currently have HC issues. Have a hang tag that I put over my windshield. Limited to 50 feet of walking--so no space within that perimeter, no shopping. A mobility cart is also required for the big stuff. Most of the time, I am able to find the necessary parking and a cart.
Spyder does not go into Anchorage and shop the mall parking lots. The parking lots I encounter mostly have easy access parking.

If there is plenty of motorcycle parking, I'll park there. I have handlebars, wear a helmet and straddle a seat. I like the motorcycle parking area because it keeps the bike away from the cars.
If I pull into a regular parking spot, I will ALWAYS pull in head first. This is to prevent two things that would be prevalent if you backed into a space. First, it helps prevent door dings from car doors opening and slamming into my front wheel fenders since the wheels are closer to the curb if I pull in head first. Second, it keeps cars from swinging wide as they park and running into one of my front wheels as they are pulling into the space next to me. They aren't expecting to have that extra wheel sticking out there, down low to the ground and if their first glance tells their brain that it is a two wheeled motorcycle, they might not realize that they could hit me.
And one other thing. If I pull into a regular space, I pull straight in and as close to the middle as I can get. Again, people who part next to bikes tend to squeeze a bit out of their spot and often actually park over the white line into your spot. When they go to leave, you are right back into the situation where they can't see all of your three wheeled machine and crank their steering wheel while being too close to you.
I'm all for being courteous and do try to be whenever possible but as long as my machine and insurance costs me just as much as most of the cars I'm parking around, my first concern will be protecting my machine. If there is room for "doing the courteous thing" after that, then by all means.

No motorcycle only spots in my neck of the woods. I use a regular spot and park towards the end of the space so a car doesn't go whipping in there thinking it is empty.

There aren't many places here with motorcycle only spots either. I go to the Phoenix VA a couple times a month and parking there is very scarce. Fortunately, there are a passel of motorcycle only spots. They even striped them wide enough for trikes

Could he have been including Sales Tax?
I pay $36 bucks here in New York, and that includes the charge for a vanity plate.

The $340 is the total cost to get my plates and includes other taxes and fees.
PLATE AND REGISTRATION FEES
Whether registering your vehicle for the first time or renewing your registration, you will pay an excise tax fee and a registration fee. Customers living in certain counties and municipalities will also pay a surtax or wheel tax. Vehicle registrations must be renewed every year.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice ... in practice, however, that's just a theory.

In car spots, yes. In motorcycle spots, no.

I aways park which way I deem is the safest for my spyder and the space provided .
While parked on a town street a while ago we parked parallel to the side walk in car spots because they where to narrow to park on a diagonal.
We where scream at by an ignorant person for taking up two spots .
When we explained why he flipped us off and stormed away back to his entitled Range Rover and drove away.
Park which ever way is the safest for you and traffic and you can't go wrong unless it's in front of a hydrant then all bets are off LOL.

It verges on the bicycle lane. Normally I would be worried, but many bikes cross that line, and the police do not have an issue with it.
