He mentioned that lots of folks wait until the tire is about bald . But, he has to mention that to me as part of their service. I am not about to wait that long.
What do Spyder riders do?
Thanks!
Technical specs from the service manual says minimum depth is 5/32" for the rear tire and 3/32" for the front.

Wow Greg new tire already?!?!? Time to stop smoking that tire

4,500 miles for the first rear tire... not due to burn-offs... but due to aggressive downshifting and twisty riding. (I just keep loaning it to that aggressive rider ).

How did it look when you changed it? Kinda like what I've described? Or, more wear?
( but since, we're on the subject; how much did a new rear tire cost, installed? )

There are several forum members that have reported tires OK at 2X that milage.....Lamont being one of them - are you a tire smoker?
I have about 4,000 on mine and both fronts and rear look new....I am a pretty "spirited" rider with the occasional burnout to show off for the appropiate people.

A little past the first wear marks... but I was getting ready for a trip at the time. Probably could have gone another 1,000 locally with no problem.

I never have smoked the tire. I've wanted to, yes. But, I never have. When people ask; I just tell them there are plenty of YouTube videos out there by owners who are doing just that.

Oh! Just under $200 for the service, Tim. He said I have about 30% left on the rear brakes, as well.
Thats odd that you haven't smoked the back tire at all and are that close to needing it replaced. I have almost a full tire left by looking at other new ones and only have about 1k less miles

Mine were just into the middle wear marks at 8K. Replaced it for t5he Daytona trip. I still hadnt hit the outer wear marks, so that tells me i had it overinflated. Ill be watching the wear / inflation a little tighter on this next tire.

I'm on my third rear tire now. I got about 13K out of the two stock rear tires. I'm running a car tire on the rear now so we'll see how it does.

Lamont:
How far did you let yours go beyond the first wear indicator?
Would you say with what I have indicated, I'm good for another 3,000 or 4,000 miles?
Thanks!

Lamonster,
Any difference in feel, traction, eletcronics, etc? I'm curious if we can get away with a good car tire with tread for water displacement?...the aqua-tread variety? Shouldn't a decent car tire with 'A' rating treadwear last significantly longer than the rear stock tire on the spyder now? I'd figure the front tires can go auto type as well...why not?? They have 5 foot separation, not too different from a small car...

Just replaced mine at 11,500 miles. The inner wear bars were smooth, outers almost smooth.
The issue for me is rain. I have hydroplaned in hard rain on downshifting with an almost new tire. Don't really want to find out what happens in rain when the wear bars are blocking the tread groves!

Hahahaa .... gotta love that F.U. strip when you get ticked off.
Greg ..... think of it this way ... you get to do burn outs like you been missing for the rest of the summer and change the tire in the fall for next year.

I got 15,000 miles out of mine. I never smoked it but rode some twistys to the point where the rear tire would step out. It could have gone a little further but I changed in anticipation of a trip.
I have 21,000 on the fronts and they look like they will go to 40,000.

Wow! How far into the center wear indicator were you before you changed it?

change rear tire
I am due for a new rear tire after 16000km (10000 mls ).dealer told me the cost of the tire is $330 aus and nearly $200 aus to take out the back wheel fit the tire and replace the back wheel. What is the cost of replacement in the U.S. Is it hard to take the wheel out? i am worried about lining up the sprockets and the write belt tension.Tire wear is in the centre of the tire, I use 25 psi pressure.
Greetings Henk.

Not that far if I remember correctly. I probably had two or three thousand miles left in the rear tire but I wanted a new one for a trip through the northwest. Good thing too because even with a new tire I was hydroplaning so badly in the rain that I thought something was wrong with my engine. One of the few times this bike has scared me. Going 70 uphill in the rain and having the rear tire unhook from the road is not a pleasant feeling.

The center of my rear tire wore down after only 5K miles. The outside of the tire still has plenty of tread. I run 28lbs so I don't think pressure is the issue. It sounds like others are having similar issues with the center wearing quicker. Maybe less pressure would help....
