Honor Flight of Southern NJ
Well we had our 10th annual Honor Flight trip to take WWII and Korean War Vets and even a few VietNam Vets down to DC to see their memorials. We have it every year on the First Saturday in June as close to D-Day as possible. We had our local Police Department escort us to the Delaware Memorial Bridge and almost 100 motorcycles assisting with the escort. Each town was notified of our route and the had the local Police stop traffic and salute the Veterans as they went by. Fire Departments had their ladder trucks hang the American flag across the road and people were waving American flags as we rode by. At that point there was hardly a dry eye on the bus, and then by magic it started, the WWII and Korean Vets and VietNam Vets started telling their stories some of them for the first time since they came back from the War. Then we got to DC and the fun began We had our JROTC cadets lead us into the WWII memorial and stood guard at the New Jersey pillar as we toured the memorial. Then we went on to the Korean War memorial, Iwo Jima and the VietNam wall they wanted to see it all. For some it was the first time they have ever seen their memorials. As it was time to go we passed Arlington to pay our respects to those who did not come back. On our way back we gave the Vets letters written by the children from various schools thanking them for their service along with special notes from family members. They came back to an elaborate dinner and more gifts before the night was over.
