Default OK... Dave here with a QUESTION

I have been a motorcyclists since I was 14 years old... no kidding... I am now
a few days away from 74, that makes it 60 years this year of enjoying the fun.
I have noticed here on the forum for a few years that most all people who post
stuff about the Spyder they have and the trips taken on them, they most times
say they drove to the store or they drove to Lowes or they drove their Spyder all over
the country etc. I don't remember ever saying, I drove any of the over 40 motorcycles
I have ever owned, I always said I was going to RIDE to the store and such.
Is it just me or..... When I am straddling something to go some place like a motorcycle,
Spyder, Horse I think I am riding and not driving....
Is that the reason California don't require a motorcycle lic. to operate a Spyder because
they may think because it has 3 wheels like the Morgan it's part car, hence Drove...
    Just wondering....
    What say You.

I ride a bike and I ryde my Spyder. I drive my car or my truck but I definitely don't ride my car or truck and I never drive a bike. Yes it might be reflection on the newness of the rider/ryder when making this statement.

I would agree I rode/ride sounds right but the Spyder isn't driving itself, seems also right that you are doing the driving. Dave if this is your deepest question, I think that you need more hobbies/problems.

Love to ride . I " drive " back and forth to work all week so on the days off I may "drive " my truck to the store but I would prefer to ride my bike . I think that if you are on it instead of in it ..... its a ride

Interesting question Dave. I never gave it much thought either.

Now that I have thought about it, I seem to use both flavors--depending on the mood of the moment. Most times I am going for a ryde. I guess a mission with a errand destination is a drive (as in--to the mailbox).

Happily, most of my journeys these days are rydes, or, the drives turn into rydes.

PS. Rides is okay. Just being a smart a$$ because of the y thread a couple days back.

    Default just thinking

If ryding two up and either person can legally ryde the spyder (like my wife and I). When on a ryde I start out up front and part way through the ryde we switch positions. Now did I (drive, pilot or steer) the first part of the ryde? Yesterday we did a ryde of 250 miles I (drove) the first and last, my wife (drove) the middle part up the coast of Oregon. WE had a great time together. Just wondering did I (drive, ryde, pilot, steer or ??) I guess it really dosn't matter we did had fun.

I always thought if was fairly clear cut... If you are sitting on top of it, you are riding it - a bicycle, a motorcycle, a horse, a donkey, a Spyder, a snowmobile, a jet ski, whatever. If you are controlling it from inside the vehicle, you are driving - a car, a truck, a Slingshot, a bus, a bulldozer, a tractor (you're really not on top of a tractor). etc.

If you are in the air, you are flying - doesn't matter what seat you are in. I've never had a boat, so I'm not sure what you do with that. "Driving" a boat doesn't sound right.

    I Ryde the Spyder,
    I drive the car,
    I ride the gelding,
I drive the Titleist, some days better than others,
    I drive the truck,
But in the end Dave was ryght,
    I drive when I must,
But I Ryde when I can!
    I ride when astride
    and drive when contained!

    Ryde on!

If I'm sitting ON it and using handle bars (or reins) I'm riding. If I'm sitting IN it and using a steering wheel I'm driving.

    To me it's pretty simple.

On upcoming B-day & to the question , me personally it has always been a matter of my point of view at the time, for enjoyment vs task. (Example): I ryde to work on my bike to drive a forklift all day.....
Or "Ya I really drove that into the ground this time" (was having too much fun in light weight truck). & whenever talking about other drivers /riders I convey the same. I consider the amount of control(or lack there of) they are displaying will define if they are driving or just riding. (Hopes this make sense)

Just realized I used the word "ride" no less than 5 times in my post instead of the correct term Ryde.... My only excuse is that I had a girlfriend years ago who owned horses
