Regarding the hybrid: I think that it may have had more to do with public perception, and government grants, than an actual production vehicle (At that time...)
If they could maintain a presence in the alternative energy source news; that's always good for their public image.
If they could tie up some of the technology with patents (and locking out the competition in the process!); that's even better!
