Default My buddy has a stuck gas cap...

it is a 2012 RS and he says the cap will only click when trying to take it off. I had seen on here a stant replacement # but all searching has produced nothing. General idea for getting the cap off is a lot of side pressure from anything that is big enough to grab hold of the sides, I think?????

Any help would be most welcome,

    Thanks

    Default Bad cap

Drive 2 sheet metal screws into it and remove it. It is junk, anyway. Channel locks big enough are over 100 bucks. Any questions, call. Joe

I have had this happen, and I have pushed down on the cap, and also pulled up on the cap to get it to come off. Not saying that this will work, but it did for me. Either way, I would have a Stant cap ready to put on when they finally get the cap off.

Advance Auto parts is 10835 & 11835 at Pep boys. The cap is smaller but seems to fit well enough. I've been using this cap 2 years now without any problems. Good luck getting the old one off.

Took me about 20 minutes to get the original one off but got there in the end.

First off I hope your friends gets the gas cap off. Question : Is there certain years of the Spyder that are effected or is it all gas caps that are on the Spyders. I had a 2012 and now a 2015 RTS and haven't had any problem removing the gas cap.

It's the gas cap that was, ironically, supplied as a recall in Jan 2013. The one before that had problems with gas vapors after a ride, particularly on a hot day. So your 2012 probably has the recall gas cap which is the one that then fails at some point. Mine failed at a petrol station and it took me 10 minutes to get the cap off, I put it back loosely but it still took another 20minutes to remove it when I got the replacement. Whether you have the pre or post recall one on your 2012 I'd recommend replacing it with the Stant.

OK then :-) A trip to Pep Boys now is better than the hassle at a gas station.

I don't tighten mine until it clicks. I stop just before it clicks. No problem

Tighten till clicks.. etc... etc... etc...

On Facebook there have been a rash of people with this gas cap failure!

Seems recently the gas caps and the "click mechanism" has been failing...

I only used one click and so far no problem. Thank you to all who gave and shared their experiences how to remove the failed gas caps. This is a big help to anyone who may need.

Best way i think to get it off is use a propane torch. since it is plastic you will be able to expand it with the heat
as long as the bike does not blow up.

Propane torch for a gas cap, I want to be a long way away when you do this.
