Bad Key

Over the weekend my spyder gave a message on the display that read "Bad Key". Has any one else had this message? It will not do anything when the message shows up.

mine did that shortly after i bought it dealer had to replace the ignition switch and get new keys but no problems since then

yes did the same thing on mine come to find out the coded keys somehow lost its programing both keys thay tried to reprogram them but no luck bad ingnition switch

Dealer repaired by finding a broken wire on the DESS module. Should be able to pick up today.

As a warning to you all, you can not get a replacement key programmed to match your bike, if you don't have a working key with you.

If you lose your key while you're out on the road, make sure you have an extra hidden somewhere on the vehicle that you can get to without needing a key, or you will have to buy a new ignition switch and a new DISS module to be able to start the bike and ride, and once again have two keys.

Don't ask how I know this, just know that the cost is over $300. Oh, I'll tell you anyway...

I only had one key, and when it got damaged and lost it's ability to communicate with the DISS, there is no way to program a new key. As unlikely as it seems, you can not get a replacement key if you don't have a working key.

I found this warning in the owner's manual....
"NOTE: Your should receive two keys with your vehicle. Each key contains a computer chip specifically pre-programmed to start your vehicle. Store the spare key in a safe place because you MUST have your spare key to have another one made....."

Don't ever leave home without both keys. One in the ignition and one taped, or tie-strapped to the bike somewhere. Not in the trunk or under the seat. You need a key to get there!

If I were buying a new Spyder now, knowing this, I would have an extra key made so that there were three keys, then I could always have a backup at home in case of a bad situation. Or, if you only have one key, go get another made BEFORE you need it!

Had the same problem after my last service. Went to the service counter and they gave me the key. Already had my spare so rode home and later found the key they gave me would not work.

Simple solution - went back to the dealer and swapped the key they gave me for MY key.

I thought the black plastic tag with a code number that came with the keys was all that was needed. Anyone know what the black plastic tag with code number is for?

I'm not sure you can order just one key...I think you have order two or a whole new setup...can someone check on that?

Also, I see no need to travel with the second key...a little bit of overkill IMHO...just another thing to get lost. I don't travel with two car keys or two house keys either, just the one...

If I lose it then either I'll get a tow or if far away will have the spare over-nighted to me...I think the important point here is that as long as you have ONE of the keys somewhere, you'll be fine...then again, if I lost a key or one was stolen, I'd have the whole setup replaced anyway...

That's a good idea...my wife and I have our spares but seldom take them with us...we do know where they are, though, if needed...

Provide your car or motorcycle has ONSTAR! Be the "Boy Scout" by always being prepared for the worse case scenario - IMHO. If riding 2-up, give the spare to your pax to carry. And IF you both loose both sets of keys, you may want to reconsider driving anything all together!

One big advantage with living in a small country, never very far to go if something goes wrong, I think the drive from the very south to very north would be only eight hours without stopping. Good for me because if I brought my spare with me, I would definately loose both, so I leave it at home. Worst case, can have the spare the next day.
Good idea though to have a third.

You can get a single key but you will need to bring any other keys that you have to be reprogrammed. My dealer said $35 for the key plus $?? for programming.

We do the same thing I carry the spare key for the Spyder around when riding. Helps me alot when I go to get something out of the bike and she has locked the trunk. Also just in case one key is lost the other is there ready to go.

I think they are cutting sequence for the dealers to use on the machine. They can cut a key by dialing numbers on the machine without needing to trace an actual key on the cutter. But in Spyder's case, you will still need an original to dup the chip.

Try about $500. My DESS module went bad and is costing me $500 to replace that and the ignition switch.... of course out of warranty.
