    Default Gas cap

    My gas cap has been always hard to close. Thought it would loosen up with time but I've had the machine for 7 months and still have to put a significant amount of force to close it. Is this normal? any remedies?

    I turn the key when I close mine.

    I do too, but the last push to get the click seems to be unreasonably hard.

    I agree. It's not every time, but there has been a couple of times that I wasn't sure I'd be able to get it closed. Had to keep struggling with it and even walked around to push from the other side. Other times it's easy to close. Haven't figured out what the key factor is for the times when it's hard yet.

    It is very easy to break a key if you are not careful.

    I always use the thought process of "If I am trying too hard I am probably doing it wrong".

    Mine is difficult to close. I just gently turn the key and push down on the cap. With a little pressure down on the cap the key turns fairly easy.

    I have only filled mine a couple of times but my last time was difficult. As stated I pushed real hard and turned the key.

    same here, very hard to lock in place sometimes. It could be the fumes and vacuum effect on a just filled tank of gas, just a guess not a chemist. Very embarrassing when you have a line at the gas pump behind you and your struggling to close your gas cap!!!

    I am glad someone else posted this issue, I thought it was just me!!!!!

    me too until Don got his F3. We were both at different pumps at a gas station last week talking to each other in our helmets , "I can't close my gas cap, can you close yours?" both of us were struggling. Don finally had to come over and push on mine to get it closed. If I'd been on my own I would have had to keep struggling with that line behind me

    If you hold the key over in the open position and push hard just behind the key over the latch it is easier.

    My wife had the same issue very difficult to open and close. I put a light film of oil on the gasket. That seemed to take care of the problem and can even push down on cap to lock it.

    Default Gas Cap Gasket

    I would caution against oil on the gasket. If the oil is petroleum based, it may rot the gasket. In place of oil use silicone spray or gel which will not rot the gasket.

    Good idea on silicone. It seems like it is easier to close when the tank is not "topped off"

    I have to stand on my pegs and push the cap down then turn the key to get it to close especially if it's been a few days to a week between fueling.

    Mine is also super hard to close. Opening it is a breeze, but closing is far from it. Will try some gel around the gasket.

    Putting lubricant on the flat face gasket really will not help unless it softens the rubber to compress easier and you do not want that to break down the gasket.

    Push down on the trailing edge of the lid, closest to the seat, not the key. When it clicks latched the key will turn and come out easily. This will give you much more leverage to compress the gasket than pushing down on the key. Also will avoid bending or breaking the key which is far easier than you might think.

    Unless you feel the need to use a locking gas cap, swap it for one that does not lock.

    Ours has the same problem .
    In an earlier post there was a mention of shiming it which is what I will try .

    I noticed below someone indicated fumes and vacuum as a possibility. I notice when and if I fill my tank almost to the top it is extremely hard to almost impossible to close but if I do not almost over fill my tank I have zero issues. I also sprayed a little silicon spray too.

    If you fill to the top you can overfill into the evaporative cannister. I let the pump kick off once and then I stop. Then the fuel level is 4-6 inches below the cap. I easily get more than 225 miles on a tank so (IMO) there is no need to squeeze in that last bit.

    I have the same problem with locking the cap (really have to press it down hard in order to be able to turn the key) and at near 15000 miles, it seems to be getting worse with time. I am going to have my dealer check it out on my next visit

    Wow what a novel idea, except what is on these models is not a cap. It is a lid, with a hinge that has to be pressed down on to seat it. I had to use a hammer to pound on mine with my other hand on the key so I could turn it once it was seated. I would love to have something other than a lid on a hinge. I don't know who came up with this idea, but it sucks. I tried for 2 days to lock my lid after putting something in the gas since the Spyder had been sitting for so long without being ridden. It had nothing to do with putting gas in it, or topping it off, just opening and trying to close it. It will be going back to the dealer because it is horrible to not be able to get the key out. I would have to carry a hammer with me.

    There is no choice as to switching it out since it is attached to the Spyder, not something that screws off. It stays attached and you would have to be a gorilla to get it to close and lock. I used a hammer to pound on mine and finally got it seated to the point the key would turn back to take it out. I don't know what the solution is. Am taking it to the dealer.

    I've been afraid I was going to break the key doing it, practice with alot of patience. My thoughts
