Aerocharger offered kits that fit the GS/RS Spyders...
I guess that they were just about the equivalent of bringing, "A gun; to a knife fight", once you got them dialed-in.
Doc ran his Spyder at Bonneville, and I think that he still holds the record for the 1000cc class.

installing a turbo on a spyder is kinda like installing a turbo on a barn door..

Are there records kept for the fasted Spyders?

Yes the sanctioning bodies that run the land speed records for the Bonneville Salt Flats keep them. That all I know about that.

This a post from SethO when he ran Bonneville.

I think that Doc's two-run average might have been a bit over 128 mph...

Do I recall correctly? There were some serious reliability issues with these engines?
If it ain't broke, don't break it.

Only when trying to turbo them. The design just isn't a good turbo setup.

As I recall; Doc mentioned that the tuning for them needed to be... perfect!

It would be nice to be just a little quicker and hit redline in fifth without a struggle, but you are so close without the turbo already. He's trapped with the confines of a low geared 5 spd transmission, even with 6th, one of those larger pulleys that were available and a thinner larger diameter tire that is available...still 140~145 everytime. Serious crank and piston rework along with a seemingly endless gearboxand/or pulleys would be needed to break free of the Spyders limits.
In the twisties I was playing the tart...

Aprilia aprilia aprilia. .... answers all the questions and is much quicker and painless than messing with turbo tuning a motor that isn't designed for it.
The bottom end and gearbox are more than stout enough.

It doesn't matter, the crank is the usual weak spot like so many sport vtwins. You need a serious gear ratio/ final drive change or you will always be confined to to the same low speed redline wall. It won't take something with as much output as the aerocharger had to get you there, the spyder gets so close as it is, maybe 2psi max to be a little quicker and hit redline in 5th no problem.

Yes he did. He figured the motor with minor tuning was right about 150hp. (It's 141hp stock). Last time I talked to him he was in the process of gutting the gearboxes and going back to the 5spd sprder gear box innards because he wanted reverse back and something different about the outputs???? He said top speeds were obtained in 5th gear and it would wind up to 10k. 6th offered no higher speed that he could feel, only lower revs. I'll let you math junkies figure top speed as the speedo doesn't work.
I can try to get some pics next time I see him but other than an aprilia cluster mounted in the spyder hole and a few missing misc parts, it doesn't look any different.

The crank and gearboxes are far from being weak points on this platform. Remember, the same motor and basic gearbox pieces are run in the Aprilia bikes with the rsvr factory running 141hp. This was an off the shelf track bike.
BRP really detuned the platform for the spyder.
It's just not a good motor for forced induction Something about ring placement???

That may be true, but they aren't pushing 850 to 1100 lbs on those...way different. They can say that all they want like many of the other reliability claims they made with the Spyder. Spyders have had all sorts of transmission issues since release, front pulley shears being a big one.

I would love to see documentation to all those failures. ....thanks.
A few sheared pulley bolts because of improper torque or a bolt working loose is not a weak area, it just happens, and seemed to be more of a topic on the early models. Not an issue for many years. Thats not really a weak trans or crank issue anyway.....A full trans failure?...

I think if we were going to talk about weak links on the spyder Jim, electronics are the first area to come to mind....lol.
