Default Utopia vs BRP drivers backrest?

Does anyone have experience with both of these? Pros / cons. Othen than the obvious price difference.

Other than the quick release of the BRP I wouldn't think there wouldn't be much difference. I don't know that you can adjust the height of the backrest pad as you can with the Utopia. If you want to remove the Utopia for a no backrest look all that is needed is to remove the lower through bolt. For the difference in price the Utopia wins hands down

The Utopia is the most comfortable backrest on the market. It also has more different position adjustments than any other. The pouch on the backside of the backrest makes for a handy place for the passenger to stow small items such as cell phone, directions, etc.

The suberb customer service is a bonus.

I had a Utopia on my Vision, and it was one of the first mods I added to my Spyder.

The BRP does not have any adjustments, wish I knew before purchasing.
    Would not recommend.

Sorry , not true....my Utopia has the QUICK RE-LEASE feature. I just tilt the backrest & push up with both hands and it slides out of the post just like BRP's......... and I do agree with posts #3 & #4..................Mike

I have had both. I currently am using the BRP backrest, but the Utopia is far superior. The Utopia is adjustable and swivels. A LOT MORE COMFORTABLE FOR SURE and it doesn't cost as much. I would really like to see a pic of the quick release Utopia for the '14 BRP optional comfort seat, both on and off the bike, if anyone has one. I would not recommend the BRP backrest.

    Mike,

Do you have the $65 Driver Backrest Quick Out Option???

I want to order a Utopia Backrest and I am wondering about the plus or minus of the Utopia quick release.

    Thanks for any input.

Quite happy with the BRP backrest as it fits me perfectly. It came with the heated comfort seat and was already installed on my new 2014 RTL. (store demo) If I were looking I would certainly take a look at others.

The downside to that quick release IMO, is that someone can easily steal your backrest while you are parked. I personally don't see a reason to ever need to remove the backrest once it's installed. It folds down to make it easy for the passenger to mount.

I have the very first Utopia backrest for the RT (2010). In early 2010 I shipped my saddle and passenger backrest to Bob @ Utopia and asked him to make one that would match the passenger backrest. He did a great job. We exchanged about 40 emails with pics and measurements and such, as I had the Spyder and he had the saddle. I thought we did a pretty good job since it was a collaborative effort.

.......I love DIY'ers.....I think I may have topped that. I bought an 08 GS in 09 and put a Utopia backrest on that......without taking the cover off.......That was my second MOD..........Mike

....Yes that can occur, however the person would need to know it can be re-moved, and if you are concerned where you are parked you can always put it in your saddle bag or trunk etc. and as far as WHY you might want to not have it in place.......Well it can make it a tight fit for a " LARGE " passenger........( although the BRP one is thicker ).......and I think you are forgetting the OEM one Is also re-moveable !!!!.....Mike

I don't think it will. I think Ultimate makes a backrest specifically for their seats.

Can anyone with a "quick out" please post a pic of the backrest on and off the bike when they have a chance and state whether it is the OEM or option comfort seat. I would be grateful, thanks.

May I ask, in what scenario would you need to remove your backrest to the extent that you need a quick release? I'm just curious.

The next time Dee is over I will have Her take some.......there really isn't much to it....It's like the normal Utopia receiver bar ( the part on the backrest ).....but the bracket attached to the seat pan has a rectangular hole for the receiver bar to go into....It also contains a spring loaded ball bearing.........Mike
