250,000 miles
Passed the 250,000 mile mark yesterday:
2008 GS SM5 = 36,500 miles
2009 GS SM5 = 116,700 miles
2011 RT SM5 = 53,600 miles
2013 STL SM5 = 43,300 miles
Total = 250,100 miles
First Spyder purchased on February 17, 2008.
First 100,000 miles July 6, 2010.
Second 100,000 miles August 17, 2012.
Next 50,000 miles June 27, 2015
As you can see, I am slowing down a whole lot. Part of this is because I was off the Spyder for several months due to medical problems. Most of this is because of my advancing age - 78 years. Looking ahead, I may get to 300,000 miles, but not much beyond that. I have been retired for 21 years. During this time, I have ridden my Harleys for 500,000 miles and my Spyders for 250,000 miles.

Impressive
That is impressive and awesome. Hope I can half of that when I get to be your age. Shoot, I just hope to get to your age. Bad ticker, still working but getting closer to retirement one day at a time. You go guy. Great example for others to follow.

Wow! An accomplishment to be proud of. The things you have seen and done could fill years worth of stories around the campfire or the dinner table.

Congratulations Walt, those are some serious miles! Can you share any high mileage maintenance tips with us? Anything you've had to replace on each machine other than the obvious brakes and tires? What's been your oil change interval and brand of choice? Valve check history?

That's some riding.
I can't recall exact miles on the 24 previous motorcycles I've owned, but I have ridden over a million miles since I bought my first in 1966. 10 bikes had over 75,000. My first was a used 1964 Honda 50, I was 12. Now I'm 61, handicapped and retired. My handicap is Muscular Dystrophy and it requires 3 wheels for balance, but it doesn't interfere with riding my Spyder. I wanted 30,000 miles on it the first year, but a chance meeting with a deer put my bike in the shop for 3 months last fall. So it took one year and 18 days to reach it. No complaints, this is probably the finest machine I've owned. Keep up the riding Walt, maybe I'll catch up with you some day. There's always room for a few more miles.

I have been very lucky with my Spyders with little of the nightmare stuff reported here on Spyderlovers. The 2009 GS had the power steering replaced under recall. It also had the water pump replaced. The RT had the throttlebody replaced, I think, four times. It also had the instrument cluster replaced. The 2008 GS burned to the ground, which I believe was caused by the evap canister. I did a canisterectomy on the 2009 GS. This is not a complete list. Overall, my Spyders have been relatively trouble free.
I change the oil and filters every 5,000 miles with BRP oil. Only the 2009 GS had the valve clearances checked. I believe this is not necessary until at least 50,000 miles. After that I tried to check the valve clearances every 20,000 - 30,000 miles. The clearances were within specs until about 80,000 miles and then only one was marginal. I am looking forward to getting the new engine which does not require valve clearance adjustments.

Very good information. This is what many of us were looking for. Also glad to hear about your input on valve clearances/adjustments beyond 30,000 miles.
