    Default Saddlebags Yay!!! Almost...

I was so psyched!!! My saddlebags came in.
I went by the dealer and took a quick look at the instructions and decided to do the install myself. It's pretty straight forward and I do work on my car once in a while. Although I'm not a mechanic.

So, I laid out all the parts. Read the instructions completely 3 times. Identified all the parts. Placed them in easy to reach spots and organized them by usage. (I'm anal when doing stuff like this)

I then removed the passenger handle bolts. Set up the new bolts with the parts in exact order and screwed them in place. Now here's the interesting part... Can-Am decided to use PLASTIC for the main piece that gets replaced. The original part is METAL. So... 84 FT Lb of torque later +- 13 and CRACK! I didn't even make it to 65 Ft lb of torque!!! WTF did they use a cheap 3D printer to make the damn part? I read the instructions several times. It specifically states on the install of the bolts 84 Ft Lb +-13 of Torque.

So, for the other 3 I just tightened them and ignored the torque.

I'm so pissed. How the heck am I going to replace this one piece? (part #8)

    Any thoughts?

On any of the torque specs, because everything had a form of Loctite on it, I did a snug
fit after anything "hit bottom", and on the anchors the same and they won't move. (I bet
20lbs is plenty for most of the stuff even). I am thinking 85lbs is WAY too much. We are talking
    wheel torque specs there.

To replace... I think that piece is surrounded by another? (You could attempt a epoxy fix
for now if its not totally destroyed.)

It's cracked but not shattered. I was thinking of an epoxy fix. I'll try tomorrow morning.

Capt_Ron...FYI... On my left side (rear anchor) i ended up having to use the thinner washer
provided for the unit to slide on. (That is why they provide the two thickness of them). Think
it is P#9 shim in the pics.

A good Epoxy should be more than capable of the fix.
It's just a shame that you had to use it...
How about some pictures of the completed project??

Agreed... I just re-looked at the instructions. Their torque specs are WAY-WAY-W A Y too high if you look
at the doc (See below). All of those parts come with loctite on them (old and the new), and only need to
be put to base and then 1/8 turn at best. The parts that are "plastic" are a more dense composite material.

For that specific bolt...here is how its printed in the doc (which makes it confusing initially with ft lbs / in vs
just ft lbs or inch lbs indicated)
    (84 lbf•in ± 13 lbf•in)

I got everything on and I'll see if I can get the dealer to order a replacement. The epoxy works, but I just don't feel comfortable.
    Thanks

Ran into this "torque" issue with the windshield. The spec is inch pounds. Use a 1/4 inch drive torque wrench.

    Default New issue

    THEY LEAK!

I poured 1/2 a bottle of water (approx. 6oz) over the top and almost 1/2 went into the saddlebag. Both.
    I just can't win.

I think their latching system could/should be a bit tighter (somehow). You can still push in a bit
once locked. The sealing material is around the opening, but, even something with a '2-stage'
lock to pull it in more would be nice.

They have been removed, packed up and are ready to be returned to the dealer.
They tried to convince me that they are "Water Resistant" and that they sell the liner bags.
    LOL.

I actually feel that it's a design flaw. The lid is too flexible and can't complete the seal when closed. It's also the locking mechanism.
Did you notice that one side the key was vertical when locked and the other it was horizontal?
This is because they used the same locking lever inside and had to rotate the lock 90 degrees to make it work. That's just lazy craftsmanship. Not worth $1300.

I'm going to wait for the Corbins.
