    Cool First Fuel Up ?

OK...just got this Spyder, supposed to be nice tomorrow....getting ready to ride.

I need to fuel up for the first time and was curious....how do you prevent overfilling and having fuel run down the side of the Spyder ? My filler inlet has the unleaded restricter so the nozzle fills the entire hole...cant see the fuel coming up while fueling. Other then pulling the nozzle out and constantly checking.......do you have a method to prevent over-spill ?

I dont want this thing to flame up on me

    Thanks for the advice !

You mean the pump has one of those collars that you have to hold out of the way in order to pump gas? If so, I hold it with one hand, keep the nozzle in about 1" wait for the pump to click off once then I pull it out to about 1/2" and give it another shot. If you put the nozzle completely in the tank you will not get anywhere near a full tank of fuel.

On occasion I will leave the key on, spyder not running, & watch the gas gage.

No..not the collar on the pump. My fuel fill opening has a piece of metal, flange if you would call it that, that has a hole in the middle where the fuel nozzle goes in....basically it makes you have to use a unleaded fuel nozzle as they are smaller in diameter. My other motorcycle, when you open the fuel door...you have a full 2-3 inch opening so you can watch the fuel rise. On this Spyder....you cant see the fuel rising at all. So overfilling, especially if the nozzle does not self shut off, could be easy, thus causing a spill.

Just wanted to know if there were any "tricks" to not spilling fuel.

    Thanks for the comments !

    Default Listen up!

You can hear when it gets close to the top. I pull it out a little and give it another buck or so.
    Good luck and congrats.

That's what I plan to do. With that inner shield....you just cant see the gas level rising up. Thanks !

I read the manual...it said nothing on how to fill the gas or how to tell when it was near full. I will just have to pull the nozzle out to check until I find out if monitoring the gauge is accurate. Thanks !

You will get the technique after 1 or 2 times filling the gas tank.

The fuel will come out the vent which tells you that you are almost there!

All suggestions good, but please remember only 6gallon tank! Dont leave unattended , or try for 10. Ive had a overfill before I learned tricks, use the windshield washer squeegee if handy and get gas off body panels, &paper towels are @almost every station now. You will learn what you are comfy with. Enjoy

    Default Here's what you do..!!

always fill your tank slowly. Filling fast tends to load up the evap canister. When you are at the stopping point it will bubble at the overflow slots. On the RS this will display all bars including top wedge. RS has a 6.6 gal tank with one of those gallons as reserve...

Now, that's quite a difference between ST and RT manuals. The OP have given you great advice about creeping up to the full point. FWIW, it took me a number of refills to reach the point where I was confident I was getting enough in the tank and still allowing adequate room for expansion. I am still working on achieving the consistency I want for accurate mpg computation. When the hooligan bug bites, WRATGAS!

I have an RS. Put gas nozzle in and then back it out till your almost all the way out 1/2 inch at most. Fill up, it wont spill over it will spit a little when you get close to the top. I also rock my spyder, using the handle bars during the fill. You should get a full fill up this way. Also don't fill all the way if your not going on a ride. I heard it and read it someplace that you don't want to over fill.

    Default first fuel

Ifyou go out to Jacks across from the Chevron Station next to the Honda Dealer you can get non Ethanol added fuel for your Spyder I'm not sure how many stations carry it in Albany as we use the Knot Hole in Lebanon .
