Default RotopaX Gas Cans - Gasoline Smell

Anybody besides me have a problem with gasoline fumes escaping from a 1 gallon RotopaX can stored in the right side saddle bag of an RT? Not liquid leaking, but just fumes.

I've talked with the folks at RotopaX and they basically told me "tough s _ _ t, fumes from gasoline stored in any kind of container can leak out".

I had a Reda can and it stunk also. Couldn't use the side saddle bag for anything but tools after putting the can in there.

I have the 1.75 RotoPax and I've never had any problem. However, I store mine upright in my 622 trailer.

I would suspect any gas can is likely to vent fumes. What I do is use the 'spill kit' approach of putting the can in a strong plastic sack (e.g. garden rubbish sack), twist the top around a lot, double it over and then put a rubber band around it so it's sealed. That way the gas can still vent but no smell escapes.

eesh now you have gas smell from the container plus the smell from the bike itself lol. I noticed my 08 smelling again yesterday as the temps are really up here but appears nothing you can do about it.

Gas evaporates, the can will vent, or get very fat then rupture . I have folks buy 100 LL av gas and I always caution them to allow the container to vent. I have used a gas can on a trailer hitch before during western travel.
If I can't fix it, I will fix it so no one can fix it. Sypder Loco!

I have a Reda as well, it stinks but the peace of mind is worth it.

Cool MIne is a Reda too

I put mine in a 2 gallon sized zip lock and carry it in my trailer. Have never smelled any fumes and have been days at a time in 100 deg. F+ temps. Won't try and tell you the can doesn't swell in those conditions, but so far the inside of my trailer does not smell like gas and trust me that my wife would not tolerate her clothes smelling of petrol. Try the big zip lock. Also please be aware that gas fumes do really bad things to the material that saddlebags are made of.
