Mechanical noise when first starting
Upon starting my 2014 RT Limited, after storage for a couple of weeks in an unheated garage, it exhibits a loud mechanical sound for 3 - 5 seconds then disappears. If I start it daily, the sound is barely noticeable and only last for a fraction of a second. I do not think it's a fuel pump since all reports indicate a constant whine. Any thoughts as to what this mechanical noise might be?

Hard to say..!!
Being that it last for such a short time it is hard to get a good listen for the source. I remember the Kawasaki vulcan's when first prep'ed they would take a good mile of testing before the hydraulic lifters would quite down. This was also an engine with no valve adjustments needed. Then again some fuel pumps also need to charge up and can have a dry sound till the fuel is flowing. The longer it sits the more they drain. You could run it by a tech who would know where to listen..

I tend to think it is the fuel pump. There have been a few reported that seem to run or at least make a noise constantly that are possibly/probably faulty.
That aside, mine always makes a noise for a second or two upon start up if it hasn't been ridden for a few days. If it has been out and stopped and restarted after a short time, it makes no noise or a very short duration.
My Yamaha Venture and my Goldwing did exactly the same thing although the noises were different depending on the bike. The venture made a clicking noise, for example, if the fuel pump needed to operate.
I'm not a mechanic and have not heard the noise yours makes so take my opinion as just that, an opinion.
See what others think. Hope you get it figured out.

Have you asked your dealer to listen to it yet?
None of us are in a position to hear it...

Talked to my Spyder mechanic and he feels, without hearing the mechanical noise, it is oil drip down coming from the engine and this is normal when a engine has not been run in a while. He suggested not running the engine in the winter and wait till April. As I said, when the weather is warmer and the Spyder is run almost daily, the start up noise is almost non existence and really not noticeable.

I don't know of too many engines that don't have mechanical sounds when starting. You don't hear your car because of the sound insulation. I would start it, run it and enjoy it. Too much worry just kills the enjoyment. What do I think is causing this? Engine circulation of the oil that has been sitting for a long time. Go riding.

My 14 RT clatters like a can full of screws for 3-5 seconds every time I start it...... Dealer says its just the lifters pumping up... not to worry bout it. So I don't.

I learned at Lamonster's BBQ this year that if you hold the throttle wide open and crank the engine it does not start and you get the oil up to pressure before actually starting the engine. They did this after a oil change demo before starting a dry engine. Maybe this needs to be done in this situation.
