Default 1330 OIL REPORT PHASE 2

As promised here is the report on the Mobil 1 4T 10-40w full synthetic oil after 6234 miles. The motor has 15234 miles on it at this point. The BRP semi-synthetic 5-40w did well in the test, but sheared to a 20w at 6000 miles.

The first column is the Mobil 1 and the thrid column is the BRP semi-syn. The cSt Viscosity @ 100c is the weight rating of the oil. The Mobil 1 is just above 30w and the BRP is at 20w.

I noticed no difference in drivability between the two oils, or any differenc in the sound of the motor.

Currently I am running BRP full synthetic 0-40w oil and will have that tested at 6000 miles also (next year as winter is fast approaching). The reason I am doing this is to know what oil works the best and not what I think/feel is the best.

Great info! The M1 held its viscosity really well. The high moly and boron should be taken into consideration. They are friction modifiers, which might make me twitchy in regards to some wet clutches...even though it says its spec's for it. Good for engine wear though.
Also, if you use a high moly oil keep an eye on your copper wear. Moly can cause detioration of copper as it traps moisture.
This seems like it could be a really good oil for the 1330 machines!

PW: Thanks for the report. First one I've seen on M1 oil and in my book, an exceptional showing with that many miles (6K+) on it.

It does appear to be in the mid-30W range based on this chart (http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/viscosity-charts/ but several well known brands of synthetic oil I've tested had dropped to 30W down to 20W by time they hit 4000 miles. Some even at 2000 miles.

I would think M1 might be a good 5000 miles oil, changing the filter every other oil change. If one were running in a very hot climate, throw in a quart of 20-50 to really hold the viscosity up.

If anyone sees it on sale, give a shout. I believe one of the auto stores, either AZ or AA, has a sale once or twice a year, but not sure when. Its about $10+ at Walmart anytime.

thanks for all the great info on the oils you tested. This will help the many with questions about what oil to use and how often to change it....

Great info provided here. The idea of testing to see what the best oil is for these bikes is great. Some brands have a great following but only testing in the real world will tell the truth.

Good results on the M1. I would switch immediately to it, but I am still a little leary about the wet clutch issue. Think I'll wait a bit. As long as I change mine with BRP blended at 6K and do the filter every other time should be OK. I don't run the bike that hard and that 20 wt should be fine. Might throw a qt of 20w50 in in the summer. Does BRP even make a 20w50 in a blend?

I had no clutch issues in the 6000+ miles that I ran this oil. I am not aware of 20-50w oil from BRP

I sent them an email asking and will post their answer. I know a few years ago that Motorcycle Consumer News did an article comparing motorcycle oils and I will see if I can find it.

I'm pretty sure the Mobil 1 20-50 is rated the same as their 10-40. Seems I've seen JASO Ma on the bottle. Will be at Walmart today and will give a look. Amsoil and Valvoline 20-50 is rated Ma2 as well as many other brands.

Edited to Add: The bottles of M1 20-50 ARE NOT marked Jaso ma, much to my surprise, but as stated above the 10-40 is.

Default Amount of Moly in M1 Cyle Oil

The test number was about 52 for the Mob1 and thats in the range of what I've seen on several Amsoil tests I've done. I asked the guru's on BITOG a good while back "what would be considered too much for wet clutch bikes" and forget the exact answer but it was somewhere in the 3 digit range. Will see if I can do a search and get the exact answer.

Red face A study of motorcycle oils - 2nd edition - conducted by Amsoil

Updated with new test results and expanded to include 32 different motorcycle oils, A Study of Motorcycle Oils – Second Edition (G2156) describes and represents the properties of various motorcycle oils which were purchased and tested in 2008 through early 2009.
