Thanks for posting. Luckily, my brand is not mentioned.
It is a big scary that a lot of big names are getting tagged with various safety issues of late. They keep putting new safety technology into the cars, but seem to be letting the basic stuff go by the wayside. RE: airbags. They have been around for a long time now--did they try to make the defective part cheaper? That appears to be what happened with all the bad ignition switches.
Currently Owned: 2019 F3 Limited, 2020 F3 Limited: SOLD BOTH LIMITEDS in October of 2023.

Problem is the NHTSA is recommending these get done right away, but there is no where near enough parts to do them all now. Ford has refused to send out the notices until the parts are actually available. (This is why they are not on the list of recalled vehicles at NHTSA web site).

A Non-Issue; I don't buy a vehicle, with the intent of busting it up...
Crap happens... and an airbag with shrapnel; is still a better choice than bouncing around like a ping-pong ball in your vehicle.

it is the passenger side air bags that has the problem, they want to remove them and send you on your way till the new ones come in. i think that is a bad idea. lucky my car is not on the list also

So your car can be just like this one?

What happens if i am driving along, minding my own business & godzilla plays hackey sack with my car? My passenger side
air bag goes off, i duck & the shrapnel flies into his leg. godzilla gets pissed off & then steps on my car & it gets crushed. All this
happens because of a faulty air bag.
Bob does insurance cover something like that?

If anyone has actually seen this device you would be very conserned. This recall has been out for a while on different models, we had a recall on the pontiac vibe for this air bag inflator and it actually looks like a small pipe bomb . Toyota has the same but now there expanding it to others models with it.

my friend owned a body shop connected with a Chevy dealer. if they had to ship a air bag back to GM they had to set them off so they were not shipping explosives, they would put them on the ground and put 12 volts to them to let them explode. i could not believe how high they would go

That could be fun on a Saturday afternoon; head down to the dealership with the family, and watch them set off a few airbags!

There are large numbers of vehicles with these air bags not yet listed on the NHTSA web site. A number of manufactures have refused to send notices until the parts are available. Just because your vehicle is not listed does not mean you are in the clear.
If the issue is pushed too fast, Takata could well go under. Current estimates are better than 16 million air bags need to be replaced. If this happens, the OEMs would need to source another vendor for the parts.
On the shipping thing, there is no need to discharge an air bag prior to shipping. You can ship an intact air bag just fine, just not via air freight. How else do you think they get to your dealership as parts? The dealer that was blowing them up was likely just an employee having some fun with old parts....
