    Default Depends..!

if they carry motorcycle oil with the same specs. You would do better going to a bike shop. Manual gives the specs needed. If you are do for an oil change soon mixing oils would be fine otherwise try to keep the same oil. Whenerver you have an oil change get an extra qt for topping off...

Do not put regular automobile engine oil in it. You may get away with it if you don't put much in but, why chance it. Get a good 5w-40, 10w-40 or 15w-40 full synthetic with a JASO rating of at least MA (NOT MA1). MA2 is better.

That part can be a bit confusing because...

MA1 (Not too good and not good at all for the Spyder)
MA (Better and good enough for the Spyder)
    MA2 (Best!)

If you have to, 20w-50 with the same JASO rating will do. Especially for topping off.

OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE A NOVICES.... NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT, WE ALL WERE AT ONE TIME... AND IT'S GOOD THAT YOU ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS.....
GO TO YOUR DEALER, AND BUY A QUART SPECIFICALLY MADE FOR YOUR SPYD3R.....

    DO NOT TAKE CHANCES
    ....
ALWAYS KEEP AN EXTRA QUART HANDY, FOR THE EXTRA $10, IT'S CHEEP INSURANCE... AND REMEMBER, ALL THESE ENGINES WILL BURN ABOUT A QUART BETWEEN OIL CHANGES... SO PLEASE DON'T THINK THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH YOUR SPYD3R....

Advanced Auto Parts stocks Mobil 1 synthetic oil for motorcycles that meet all of the specs..It is not in the automotive oil section though...You have to search for it...i bought it for top offs...I almost never visit a dealer without buying an extra quart of XPS,just for top offs...Can't always time it right though.

It certainly can't hurt, to have a quart (Litre?) of BRP's slippery stuff on the shelf... Get the blended stuff; it's what comes with the bikes from the factory.

You can also find Valvoline motorcycle oil at Wal Mart that meets all the specs. Its in the motorcycle section, not with the other motor oils.

Does this hold true for the new 2014 as well?
Reading thread, first I heard of engine "using oil" and needing to "top off". Coming from GL1800 that never needed oil between changes (now have RT-S 2014).

The 1330s have NOT been showing a tendency to burn oil as much as the 998s have...

In the 13,000 miles I have ridden, and every time I have checked I have never had to put in any oil.
Make sure you are checking the oil after it is at full temp like after a ride, but let it idle for about a min before you check to let all the extra oil settle (per BPR tech).

Go ahead; buy the kit from your dealer... Does the parts guy know what he just sold you?

When you buy from Ron; you're getting someone in your corner; that KNOWS the proper oil for your application, and is more than happy to discuss anuy of the options with you.

How much did you spend for your bike?
Do you REALLY want to try to save money, on something as important as oil?

I buy a case of 10-40 synthetic Motorcycle Amsoil from Baharon....It is delivered to my front gate in 4-5 days....the only way to go. (much cheaper than the locals sell it for) Big Red 1 uses about 1/2 quart per 1,000 miles or so. I check it after each 500 just in case. Works for me.

I traded my 2014 RT for a 2017 Mr. White RT-S. I am George Lewis. I live two miles from Boerne, TX. I am 89, retired USAF and Sony Corp. I also have a GW MotorTrike. My email: scoot62@aol.com

I am somewhat concerned about the Rotella T-6. The owners manual states that oil that meets the API SM spec should not be used. Rotella T-6 meets the API SM spec. http://s02.static-shell.com/content/...6-brochure.pdf
