Gas Mileage

Hi everyone
I am needing to know what everyone else gets for mileage out of their 2011 RTSE5???
I use premium gasoline and travel the speed limits +5 and the best I can get out of a tank is 160 miles or 250K.
Is that normal?

from what I have seen here and the folks I ryde with...you are doing very well. Most are needing gas at 120+/-..but don't sweat the small stuff a buck here or there should no affect any part of your ryde...

I had an 2011 RTSM5 that I got 30 to 32 mpg. Filled up around 150 miles. The wife's 2012 RTSE5 got an average of 28 to 30 mpg. This seems to be the average.

I get about 150 - 160 miles per tank on trips. 125 - 130 miles per tank around town.

Filled our 2011 yesterday. 164.3 miles and put in 5.01 gallons. 32.79 mpg--I would round that up to 33 mpg. Most of the time we get 30 - 31 mpg.

We also use premium gas and travel speed limit +5.

We keep the rpms in the 4500 - 5500 range unless we are going faster than 65 in 5th--then it is what it is.

What RPMs are you turning? My Spyder gets much better MPG (34+ MPG) at 5300 to 5500 RPMs than at 4500 to 5200 . . . I almost never get into 5th, anymore, unless I am really moving.

For my 2010, I would typically get about 28 to 30 mpg running a mix of about 60% highway (70 mph) and 40% back roads (40 mph).
On those days riding with friends, virtually 100% back roads at speeds no more than 45 mph, I could get around 33 mpg.

It amazes me how many people just do not believe their lousy gas mileage problem is likely cause by not spinning the engine fast enough. There can be other causes as well of course. Someone came up to me in the gas station the other day and said he had a RT. He brought up how bad is gas mileage was. I suggested maybe he was not revving it high enough. He said he does not have to worry about revving very much because his is a SM.

i have found that if you keep the rpm's up in the powerband you get better gas mileage. not that i'm concerned with the mileage. it's a toy, who cares if it's good or bad. i tend to keep the revs on the lower side cause at higher revs this yoshi pipe sounds like an apache helicopter ten feet behind me.

The wife and I pulled a trailer two up for a little over 2000 miles from San Diego to Eureka and back and we averaged 31 mpg! I was happy! I found that with it in trailer mode and 5000 rpm it just sipped the gas. Now I do not ride til the light comes on, mostly because my bladder makes me stop about every 120 miles anyway. I say just get on and ride! I did not by it for the mileage, I bought it for the smileage.

I am not concerned about gas mileage either. It just gets me that the folks that are, try to run there rpms a low as possible and burn more gas. Folks like us run higher rpms and burn less gas.

When going on a long trip such as Danbury to Lake George for SpyderQuest, one would like to stop every two or so hours.
A range of 120 miles per tank is OK. You need to stop anyway.
BUT, if you use the bike as a daily commuter, 120 miles means you have to stop for gass every other day to fill up, adding to your commute time.
To what purpose ?

A little different take on range. I drove a 40+ mile commute each day for 11 years here in Alaska. I would end up needing gas every four days or less.

Most of my daily commutes ended up in being a lot more miles since I would many times take a scenic ride once I got back near home. (One of the benefits of living in Alaska).

I have always lived within 5 to 7 miles of a gas station--so when it came time to refill for the next day commute, I would just fill er up and be ready for the next day.

Range has not been an issue for me because I have had to get off and stretch every 50 - 75 miles anyway. If I am in an area where gas is few and far between, I just hit a gas station when I see it and top off.

The 2014 ACE 1330 has added fuel mileage and range. Now I get 200 - 210 miles before the fuel light goes on. I still have a 2011 Rotax 990 though, and still have the mileage/range differences there.

My 2010 RTS-SM5 Has averaged after breakin 30MPG. 20,000 plus mi. on Spyder now So you are in the ballpark...

My 2012 RTs manual trans using premium fuel without ethanol I get 38 to 42 mpg. I normally have the low fuel light come on around 200 miles.

Just hit 5k miles I'm avg @ 30mpg 160 per tank. Phone app (gas cubby) helps a lot

Same with my 2014 STS... Not a 6 Gallon tank, first of all and get's 160 - 170 a tank depending how it's being ridden.

Curiously; my last fill-up has shown me something interesting...
Prior fuels had alwasys been from the 93 octane tank...
this last one was with 87... (necessity forced my hand!)
I did notice less roll-on power, and the bike needed a few more rpm to feel comfortable with full-power.

But the fuel mileage came in at 42.3 mpg; as good as almost any that I've recorded.
I'm back to 93, but I won't worry if I need to throw some of the cheaper dino-squeezins' in.

Thanks to all that posted to my thread. If I want more range, guess I have to buy a new one with bigger tank.
