Insurance Question

I called my insurance company(Progressive) today to get a quote on a '14 RT/LTD SE6. For comparison purposes, I had their renewal premium($819.00) for my '09 GL1800 Hannigan Trike in front of me. I provided them with a VIN from the dealer. I was floored when they said it would cost me $600.00 more annually. I was thinking with all the safety features built into the Spyder, compared to my Level 2 GL1800, that the premium wouldn't be much different. Plus, the 1330 is smaller and is slightly less powerful than the GL1800.
My questions are:
1. From an insurance perspective are Spyders seen as less safe?
2. Who do people with RTs insure with?

I have my and 4 Harleys covered by AARP (Foremost) (if your over 50) for about $1400 a year for full coverage. If I remember correctly the was $550 or so.

I have been with GEICO insurance for my going on 3 years, I have full coverage + Towing/ Labor costs, MSF, Dual, Anti-Theft Device, and Transfer/ or Renewal Discounts. I pay $700.00 Twelve month premium. I have an excellent driving record( Zero Accidents)

Progressive was great on my Vstar 950 but were about 3 times higher on the Spyder. I ended up with Metlife where I have my home and auto.

Hi we checked almost all the carriers available and by far here in NM Geico was the cheapest we have towing accessory coverage and full coverage for just over 400 per year!

I've got my 12RT & 92 R100r with Velorex sidecar full coverage $436 annual through Dairyland no tickets or accidents though. Towing through AAA though, the agent I initially signed up through mainly wrote RVs and cycles big difference, now retired different office haven't actually spoken with agent it was switched to. Used to be Virginia Quiroga, now it's Freeway insurance.
Bet if my sidecar sells premium will go up though

Indiana seems to be pretty high on insurance. I lived there from 1972 - 1979. Rates will vary due to a gazillion things. Age, history, etc. etc. I have full coverage on both my RT's from State Farm. The 2011 costs me $42.43 per month $509.16 per year and the new 2014 costs me $57.48 per month $689.76 per year. I do not think you are going to see any argument that Spyders are less safe.

You have to shop around. If you have good car, home insurance you get good rates from them. I just added it to my insurance for three cars and home with State Farm and pay $600.00 a year. Many give you multiple vehichle discounts unfortunately I can't get the low mileage discount on the spyder but now get it on my car...you really do have to search...!!

I pay GEICO $384 a year for my 2013RT Limited . . . and, if I want, I can turn it off in the winter months . . . but I don't, because I ride when the roads are dry.

Geico for me, 380 a year with 250 ded on the comp/collision, and 250/500 liability. Comes with towing.

Was about $80 a year less than my Kawi Concours.

I dropped Progressive when my rate jumped from $485 on my BMW to $859 for the 2014 RT-S Spyder.
Switched to Geico at $452 for full coverage.
Good choice.

Foremost thru my Farmers agent in Texas for just over $400 yr for my R Ltd

I've got allstate for car and home, added the st limited last week, $375 a yr. full coverage

Thanks to all for your replies. I got a quote from AARP, Geico, and Dairyland. In my specific circumstance(liability umbrella), Dairyland has the best price for coverage.

the answer to your question probably lies in the replacement cost of a 2009 unit versus a 2014 unit, I assume you were getting full coverage based on your post. Hannigan conversion not withstanding the cost of the 2014 is higher.

I've had Geico since I bought the Spyder new. This year full coverage and my annual premium is $298.00 with a $500 deductable, with towing. Also have no accidents or tickets.

I shopped; Progressive; Geico; Foremost Direct; and Dairlyland. Exact same parameters for all quotes. Dairyland was the winner, BIG TIME! Progressive: $1100; Geico $999; Foremost $600; Dairyland $313.75! AARP Foremost has to make a donation on every policy they sell to AARP. When I priced Foremost with a private agent for my wing. She was $100 cheaper than AARP Foremost! IMHO It's always best to do business with a private agent. They will go to bat for you. Mine sure did when I totaled my car. Tom

Farm Bureau in Tennessee charges premiums based on the motorcycle's worth, not safety or performance. The more the bike costs the higher the premium. I'm paying about $500 a year full coverage, $100 deductible.

Check out Nationwide. I was amazed at the money I saved over Progressive and all other quotes. I have a 2014 Spyder RT LTD and 2 other bikes.

That seems way too high. I am using Esurance (they use AMIG) and I'm paying in the mid $400 range. It went up when I went to the 1330 engine from the mid $300 range.
