Sena SMH-10 Firmware Update Ver 5.0 Released
For those who have Sena SMH-10 Intercoms, Firmware version 5.0 has finally been released.
This is "supposed" to allow Sena intercoms to talk to non Sena units. This is the update that I had originally heard was going to be released last December. See link for further details.

I take it this is strictly the SMH-10 and not the SMH-10R respectively?

As mentioned the firmware update is only for the SMH-10.

The new multi-Brand feature is called "UNIVERSAL INTERCOM". Here's some excerpts from the manual.
17. UNIVERSAL INTERCOM
You can have an intercom conversation with non-Sena Bluetooth
headsets using the Universal Intercom function. Non-Sena Bluetooth
headsets can be connected to the Sena Bluetooth headset if they
support the Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile (HFP). The working
distance may differ depending on the performance of Bluetooth
headset that it is connected to. In general, it is shorter than normal
intercom distance since it uses the Bluetooth Hands-Free Profile.
17.1 Universal Intercom Pairing
The SMH10 can be paired with non-Sena Bluetooth headsets for
Bluetooth intercom conversation. You can pair the SMH10 with only
one non-Sena Bluetooth headset; if you pair with a different non-
Sena Bluetooth headset, the previous pairing list will be removed.
17.3 Three-way Universal Intercom
You may make a three-way Universal Intercom connection with
two SMH10s and one non-Sena Bluetooth headset. If the intercom
connection is made, all headsets connected cannot use the mobile
phone call function since the connection between the headset and
the phone is disconnected temporarily.

Limited distance
Since Sena is using bluetooth to connect to non Sena headset the usable distance I would guess be 40 or 50 feet. That would make that feature of limited use. It would work well in situations when you are stopped close to each other, intersections, etc.

they do state that they are working on the same firmware for the complete product line

Why would you say that? Sena shows a range of 900 meters which may be stretching it a bit but Louise and I have no trouble at half a mile or so with our SMH10R Bluetooth headsets.

Wonder when they will have the update for the SMH-10R?
Oh, and anyone know how to get the serial number from the SMH-10R headsets? Don't see it on them.

Latest Sena SMH10R Firnware
The latest firmware update for the Sena SMH10R is version 4.3 released on November 10, 2013.
It can be downloaded from their website along with the Sena Bluetooth Device Manager software if your Sena product is registered with them.

I have the same model as you the SPH10H. Support for Sena told me the new firmware 5 would be coming to our model. I was giving him an ear full about the 4.3 version skipping our model.

Since everyone I ride with uses sena I'm more interested in the side tone. This has been something g that has been missing for awhile so you don't find yourself screaming!

You also need to upgrade Sena software on your PC. Sena recommended it.

New SENA Firmware for more devices
SENA has new firmware for the SMH10R, SMH5 & SMH5-FM. This brings the Universal Intercom and Sidetone features to 3 more of their Bluetooth Devices. These features were previously available to the SMH-10.
"...pleased to announce the release of the version 5.0 of the SMH10R and 2.0 of the SMH5 and SMH5-FM with major enhancements in functions and features such as Universal Intercom and Advanced Noise Control™.
- Universal Intercom™: You can have an intercom conversation with non-Sena Bluetooth headsets using the Universal Intercom™ function.
- Advanced Noise Control™: It is equipped with wind noise suppression and intelligent Noise Gate in the intercom to limit the interference of wind noise and background noise while riding.
- Sidetone: If this feature is enabled, you can hear what you are speaking during an intercom conversation or a phone call.
You can upgrade your firmware using the new Device Manager v2.0.1 for Windows and Mac users.
Please be sure to register your product online in order to download the new Manager software, since free upgrade service is provided only to the registered users. For more details, please visit Sena web site at www.SenaBluetooth.com."

well after attempting to upgrade my SMH10 and failing, I contacted Sena and they issued me an RMA to send the unit back to them
got an email back from them that they are sending me a new unit since apparently there was a problem with mine - waiting for it to arrive any day now...

You mention the helmets being paired to each other...they can be paired to each other "and" to separate iPods?
I'll have to try it and use the button you mention, thanks.
-
The helmets function totally independently until the intercom function is activated. The intercom has first priority in the system.

Yes, remember that the intercom communication from helmet to helmet is not a Bluetooth connection. The range would be to short.
