I carry the Taurus 380 ACP. Small, lightweight. I also have a Walther PPK. Love and would recommend both. If I need a big gun I also have the Taurus Judge.. Not a concealed carry, but will do the job around the house.

My favorite is a Sig 228 in 9mm.
First handgun I handle when I was a kid(a long time ago) was my Dad's semi-auto Llama in .380 (scaled down model of the 1911).

Bersa .380 is my choice! The Bersa Thunder380 with the 10 round magazine and one in the chamber gives you 11 shots. Great feeling grip. Can be had for $275 at the right dealer.
Use a Kimber 40 in the night stand, Colt Huntsman for target practice and SO has a 9MM in her night stand.
Theres a bunch of very light, small, 9mm out there. I'd suggest one of those instead of a 380. Any lightweight does have a sharp kickback and are not a bit of fun to shoot unless you have one tought hand. I carry a Ruger LCR with 38+p's and it too is no fun to shoot. I use regular 38's for practice or load my own even lighter. However, with a revolver you only have 5 or 6 rounds in it. Stick with a good brand. Kel Tec's can be problematic and I wouldnt' trust my life with one unless i'd put a lot of rounds thru it without any issues. One other suggestion; if you can find a Makarov, made in Germany or Bulgaria, (not the rinky dink Polish things some call a Mak...they're not...but do use Mak ammo).they are absolutely one of the most reliable semi-auto's ever made. The round is called 9mm makarov...longer than 380, shorter that 9 mm luger. They're solid steel, a tad heavy, but thin and easy to conceal. I carried one for a long time.

I have a Ruger LCR .38 as well, nice gun, but like you said you don't want to shoot it unless you have to...it's very uncomfortable w such a short stock.
But getting 9mm MAK ammo might be problematic... And if you're not comfortable shooting it; DON'T carry it!
Practice with what you're going to carry until it's completely second-nature...
(Recoil has never bothered me... but I'm just too thick-headed to know when I'm having too much fun! )
And while we're at it...
Magazine capacity is a VERY poor excuse for not shooting straight! Situational awareness should be your ally in avoiding an angry football team that's got blood in it's nostrils...

I have the Sig P238 and really like it. Added the extended magazine to have a place for little finger. Recoil is really not bad compared to my 9mm which is the Ruger SR9C.

Another very reliable pistol that uses 9mm Makarov is the CZ 82. They are military surplus pistols from Czechoslovakia. They are VERY well made and very affordable. 9mm Makarov is available all over the internet - most places that sell ammo online carry it. Buy FMJ for range shooting, and hollow points for self defense. CZ also makes the CZ 83, which is, for all intents and purposes, the same pistol, but chambered in .380 ACP. It holds 12 rounds in the magazine and one in the chamber. Both are SA/DA, all metal guns. With regards to revolvers vs. pistols with magazines, a revolver is much simpler and never fails to feed . . . purely point and click . . . Jerry Miculek shows how quickly one can fire all six rounds, reload, and fire six rounds again, here!

Sig P238 is what I some times carry when I'm not carrying a Glock.
I heard that Glock was coming out with a .380 pistol? I thought they had one but not for sale to the general public, LEOs only.
Glock is rumored to be announcing a .380 in January (G42).. I'd wait for the reviews on that before pulling the trigger... (sorry, couldn't resist)
