This was the elite Hotshots group too. Very sad. I have many friends that are or were firefighters, BajaRon being one of them. Prayers go out to the families and the one survivor, I'm sure he's going through a lot right now too.

Saw this on national news this morning. What a tragic loss. Wildfires can be very unpredictable. Being a retired volunteer firefighter, this is close to my heart. Prayers for the families and community.

HEMET — Two of the 19 firefighters killed when a wall of flame overwhelmed them as they battled a wildfire in Arizona were Hemet natives, and another was the son of a Los Angeles County fire captain.

Hemet natives Chris MacKenzie and Billy Warneke, both in their 20s, died Sunday near Yarnell, Ariz., while deployed with fellow firefighters from the Granite Mountain Hotshots.
The crew was among 400 firefighters attempting to get containment lines around a brush fire, now at 8,000 acres, ignited at a business just off State Route 89, a highway that leads north into the mile-high city of Prescott, where the Hotshots were based.

MacKenzie and Warneke were both Hemet High School graduates — MacKenzie in 2001, Warneke in 2005.

Kevin Woyjeck, 21, was the son of county fire Capt. Joe Woyjeck, Los Angeles County fire Inspector Tony Aikens said.

The city of Prescott has released the names of the 19 firefighters who were killed. Fourteen of the victims were in their 20s.

    • Andrew Ashcraft, 29
    • Kevin Woyjeck, 21
    • Anthony Rose, 23
    • Eric Marsh, 43
    • Christopher MacKenzie, 30
    • Robert Caldwell, 23
    • Clayton Whitted , 28
    • Scott Norris, 28
    • Dustin Deford, 24
    • Sean Misner, 26
    • Garret Zuppiger, 27
    • Travis Carter, 31
    • Grant McKee, 21
    • Travis Turbyfill, 27
    • Jesse Steed, 36
    • Wade Parker, 22
    • Joe Thurston, 32
    • William Warneke, 25
    • John Percin, 24
