Default Power Steering DPS on 2010 RT

As stated , I have a 2010 RT SE5 -- 7000 miles , its been out of warranty for a year -- The check DPS light came on ... It seems the power steering is gone and its left me scared to drive it ... I took it to the dealer , they quoted me approx 1500 to fix the unit ... 1200 for the DPS and 255 labor ... I contacted BRP and voiced my concern and asked for some help , seeing as the bike only has 7000 miles ... No luck , they basicly told me I was out of warranty and they were not willing to help ... I can get a DPS fairly cheap from a wrecked 2009 -- However Im concerned that it may be the first generation ... I havent taken a ride is a few months and I am banging my head against the wall ... I need some advise ...

BRP had already replaced your DPS under the recall?
If so; then I'm afraid that this one is on you...
Can you run the V.I.N. of that 2009 to see if it had it's DPS replaced?

There was no RT in 2009. The GS/RS units are different. You need one out of an RT. If the DPS on your 2010 was not replaced under the previous recall. BRP would have to pick up the tab, but if it was replaced, and that warranty has also run out, the cost of repairs is on you. A good dealer would talk to BRP for you, or try to cut you a deal, however.

I wonder how much difference there is between the RT, and RS/GS units?
    Could they be used interchangeably?

They were not able to be interchanged during the recall.

DPS has been updated a few times. New # is 219800295 and it does work on both the 09 RS SE5 and 2010 RT SE5. The used 09 DPS will work on your 2010 RT. However check the DPS part number because if its 709400453 or 709400928 (928 no longer updates) then these are the bad DPS units. Even if you can get an old one cheap DON'T use it. Retail on the 219800295 is $1129. If your dealer is willing to go to bat for you then at the very least you should be able to get one for well under $1000. If no one will help you I will. Just call me at the shop 360-825-4502.

    Default Thanks

Thanks Jeff -- I will give you a call -- The unit that I see looks like one of the older units ... If I am not mistaken , the unit that I have was not under the recall at anytime ...

    Default Thanks and Update

Thanks for the help Jeff .. I was able to call BRP directly yesterday , I faxed them my registration and they promptly updated it in their system . I then called my dealer who should have a copy of all the codes and updated them . They are supposed to get back with me today .. I am hoping I will here from them by lunch today - if not , I'm going to follow up with them ..
    Thanks again

    Default Update

Expected a call from Dealer this AM .. Did not hear from them , so I called . I was told they emailed BRP and haven't heard anything back yet , I told them that I was advised calling them was much more likely to end in a positive response and they decided to email anyway . - I got the response that they were slammed busy .. Not really happy with the dealer at the moment .. I'm giving them one more day and complaining .. I'm hoping I get pleasantly surprised .. As I really like them .. ;(

    Thumbs up Success

Got a call back and BRP said they were going to good will the repair -- success -- I owe it all to Jeff ... Even though the dealer pulled the codes , I was told that they needed to pull the codes again and could not do that until after July the 4rth ... Then the parts will be ordered .. I hope it doesnt take long to get ... I honestly think it was Jeffs extra effort that did it for me ... TY TY TY

Few months back my 2010 RT DPS had to be replaced. RPM warranty took care of the bill almost $1500. Spyder had 14000 miles on it then. To many problems for us. Now make our trips on a Goldwing Road Smith trike which is 6 years old and has 23000 miles on it. Have put 3000 miles on it in 6 weeks. This should be the last bike for us as I am 76. I really think I will not have to worry that I will wear this one out.
