I'm camping South of Cherokee for one night. There is a couple near me that has a 4 wheeled trike. It looked really strange as it drove going to their campsite.
So, is that a Harley with training wheels?
Quite common it's an add on trike kit, like training wheels. It still uses the back wheel to power the bike, but you can remove the trike kit quite quickly to return it back too two wheels.

Must fall in the training wheel/outriggers division. Can't call it a trike with four wheels...now the wing at the end of the video is cute with landing gear off the side bags...

They're great for someone how wants to be able to have a trike and in a few minutes switch it back to two wheels. But most people get them because for one reason or another can't ride their two wheeler any more and just can't afford to trade it in for a 30 k trike...
It must steer like a bear, I drove a sidecar for years but did not change the front end rake, cornering took a lot of upper body strength. Other than that go for it! :-)
I talked to the couple. She likes it because it makes her feel safer. They said remove two bolts and drive it off the unit. They are an older couple and very friendly. Like mentioned above, if it keeps you in the wind.......
I had a Cop stop and talk to me about my RT one day. He said his wife wanted to add this kit, where the wheels don't always touch the ground, to her HD. He said NO WAY, he has responded to too many accidents caused by the extra wheels when someone tries to make a quick turn. He said the inside wheel can grab the road and flip the bike in a hart beat. He was trying to talk her into going to a Spyder instead.

It's a Voyager kit, still have one on my Ultra Classic. Was my first attempt to keep riding 2 up after my minor stroke and until I could afford a real trike.
And I'm very pleased with my RT!
The Voyager Convertible kit comes off in 5 minutes and back on in 10 or so. It is very hard on the existing rear tire, wore it out in about 3K miles. Tire wasn't new to start with , but really! Adds lots of steering effort, but not bad for $4000 new. Installed myself in a few hours.

Can't say I'm a big fan of those kits, unless you are in a pinch and want to try out a trike configuration, to me it's an engineering issue, but to each his or her own.

In the Mid-Nineties, Harley was developing the "Penstar" (SP) They got it to this level, and then decided to go in a different direction...
who knows what it could have developed into by now?
("Tri-Hawk" was used to throw off the snoopers with cameras...)

Why not, the owner probably fell off it to many times. To cheap or tight to buy a good ride!
And this is the way motorcycle prejudice starts! (Begin lecture here) guys we complain when folks knock our Spyders, lets just not go there. Whatever someone rides and is great for them let them have fun even if we know there is a better way. Lets all feel pity for those Goldwing Trikes and HD Triglides and those strange four wheel contraptions in private. We know we are superior human beings! With a superior Motorcycle.
So Lets just all get along with those ignorant folks out there!
