My F3 gave me the inspiration to figure out its name - Toothless, from the movie "How to Train Your Dragon". Whenever I ride her, I feel like I'm riding a little black dragon.
Davy Crocket called his first rifle "Old Betsy." B.B. King called his guitar "Lucille"
The men who flew B-17s over Germany in WWII had no problem naming inanimate objects. I'm ryding on August 20th with the son of the man (John "Red" Morgan) who's Medal of Honor citation was the inspiration for the book, movie, and TV show "12 O'Clock High" - his crew had no problem naming their aircraft.
Charles Lindburgh named the plane he flew across the Atlantic, "Spirit of St. Louis"
We all remember the space shuttle "Challenger."
Mount Rushmore, Denali, Mount Ranier, Pike's Peak are all inanimate objects.
Most boats have names.
I could go on - history is full of such occurences. If someone wants to name their Spyder, go for it - it is a very common human trait and nothing deserving of shame - or attempted shaming.
I'll keep calling my Spyder "Topper" for reasons I've already mentioned.

I'm 68 - the made for TV series was syndicated and stayed on the air until the mid-60's.
As a tyke, I was in a crowd of kids waiting to see "Hoppie". He rode up on Topper and all the kids surged forward - Topper stepped back a few steps - and stepped on my foot. I started crying and William Boyd got off and picked me up. It was a highlight of my young life!
Mom could get me to eat anything (even asparagus) when I was little, just by telling me it was "Hoppie's favorite!"
