Default Spyder Sputtering at 4K RPMs

I could not find much information on this issue, I had my spyder serviced 23000 mile and a new rear tire and now I am having sputter issues. I am trying to narrow down what could have been done to cause the issue and how to fix it. No matter which gear I am in, once I reach 4K RPMs either I start to lose power or she starts to sputter really badly. Any clues? The oil light comes on and it behaves as if it is in nanny mode but the nanny mode does not display.

    Default exhaust gaskets

sounds like you need exhaust gaskets. or it may be just a loose exhaust clamp. i found a loose clamp on the right side, but went ahead and changed the gaskets anyway, to the honda gaskets. you're about to hear all about them. the oil light? i don't know, other than low oil level.are you feeling more heat than usual on your right foot? that's a good indicator of bad gasket or loose clamp. since you were just serviced, maybe your tech made a boo-boo.

No, I am not getting any error codes just the oil light came on and like I stated I just had it serviced. I will be taking it back to the service center for assistance as I have no clue. The exhaust gaskets, I will have to check on that one, yeah I thought it was weird that the oil light came on and stayed on. A 45 minute ride home turned into a 3.5 hour drive thanks to not being able to get any speed pass 50 MPH.

Cannot give you any good mechanical advice. But I suspect cause/effect. Now what did they do or forget to do? Please keep us posted.

That sounds very much like limp mode, although you should have seen a limp mode warning. Low oil pressure is one thing that will certainly trigger limp mode. As far as the oil pressure warning goes, check the oil level. They could have neglected to properly fill it when it was serviced. If it is OK, you could have a bad oil pressure switch. These seem to fail most often following an oil change, for some reason. Another possible cause would be a battery terminal that was left loose, or a bad battery and a bad coincidence. Still another would be that you filled with gas and got some bad fuel or that the Spyder was stored for a while with a low gas tank and picked up some moisture in the fuel. Some Marine Stabil or some SeaFoam should help in that instance, along with some fresh fuel.

    Scotty,
Yes, it was acting like limp mode but without the limp mode displayed. As for the fuel I ran it dry prior to the servicing and fill with fresh gas before the servicing. I am heading to the service center now and I will ask them to ensure they check the oil sensor and the recheck their servicing which was conducted 2 weekends ago. Once it is returned, I will get some SeaFoam or Marine Stabil and put in as a precaution. I just replaced the battery, and there did not seem to be any other issues once it was replaced, but I will also request they check the terminals.

    SupaMan,
You did not say anything about the y gasket comments. You aren't running the original gaskets at 23k miles, right?

    Hi SupaMan_3,
When on had my sputter issues with my RS and it was running real bad...my problem was a bad O2 sensor...had that replaced and it ran fine. Just a thought and good luck.

Sorry I have not replaced the “Y” gaskets unless it was a part of the service. I take it in regularly to have the recommended service. As for the O2, I will call the service center and ask them to look at it. I just dropped it off and he said it may be blown gaskets? All I know is the sputtering just started and it was just serviced. It goes in for maintenance and I expect all issues to be resolved or brought to my attention. I will ask about the “Y” gaskets on Tuesday when I follow up to see what the progress is. I thank everyone for comments and possible issues to ensure nothing is missed.

I do not want to spend a lot to get it resolved but I want my Ryde back!! This is the first real issue I have had with her. I have had minor fix it issues but nothing I could not resolve within 10 or 15 minutes thanks to the love on SpyderLovers.

I didn't think you could get an oil pressure light without going into Limp Mode. Like Scotty said, certainly sounds like limp mode, with or without the limp mode light (if it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck....).

It wouldn't be gaskets I don't think. Bad gaskets make a lot of noise but they aren't going to make the Spyder run badly or rob you of power.

Since your engine didn't seize I'd say you still have some oil pressure. May be a bad sender.

Let us know what they find as the fix.

Got the spyder back today and the mechanic could not locate the problem! Next to take it to another shop and hope they can tell me the issue. The spyder is still sputtering around 4000 rpm's and losing speed there after unless I switch gears up, and now the oil light is on solid. What an annoying problem! I just want to ride and it does not look like it will happen anytime soon. Well hopefully I can get off work to drop it off or it will have to wait until Saturday to be dropped off.

One thing you can do to check if it is the oil sensor switch. Locate the switch on the lower right side of the motor and pull off the wire. The switch operates in a normally "open" position and removing the wire fools the system into thinking it is "open". If it starts and runs OK (i.e. no Limp mode) you have found the problem.

Any chance at the last service they changed the spark plugs,?
If so i would suspect the wires are the problem. The stock wires damage easy when changing the plugs....

Do you mean the Spyder only sputters around 4,000 rpm, but is OK elsewhere, or that it won't exceed 4,000 rpm. If that's all it will do, you are likely in limp mode. Even a novice mechanic should be able to figure that out. A low oil pressure warning will trigger limp mode. If you can't find another Spyder tech, stand on the face of the service manager or owner of that dealership until they do their homework and fix it right. BUDS is going to be a great help in that process, as will the service manual and contact with BRP dealer tech support, so a qualified and certified Spyder technician is your best bet.

Mike3069 I will take a look at the oil sensor switch, the spyder is not showing any codes according to the tech that looked at it. I just checked the juice box pro and it does not have any error codes showing either.

Boborgera I am not sure, but I will ask the next tech to look at the spark plugs and the wires as I have been getting the maintenance completed at regularly scheduled mileage.

NancysToy the spyder sputters at 4000 rpms, and then starts to decelerate I cannot get it to go higher than 4000 rpms I switch gears to maintain the speed but maxing out at approximately 48-50 mph in 5 gear. I get the red oil light no yellow "limp mode" notification. Yeah I am going to another shop hoping that their tech will find something.

After the oil pressure switch is fixed, I would disconnect (not just turn off) the JB to see if that makes a difference. That is the only good way to rule it out. I'd aldso check all vacuum lines while I was there. The fuel filter could be suspect, too. It wouldn't hurt to replace it. Beyond that it will probably take a good tech, the help of BUDS, and maybe a little luck to find an answer.

Sorry to hear about your problem.

Hopefully it will get fixed... but I don't think your Spyder should ever see 5th gear in the range of 48-50 mph.

3rd or 4th gear maybe, but not 5th. Just a suggestion that you consider shifting at higher RPM's.

Again, sorry to hear about the problem, and hopefully it will be an easy fix...

Had the same problem with mine. Oil pressure light, limp mode. Problem was, it would do it at random times, and usually it would not do it when at the dealer (go figure). Replaced the oil sensor, and all is well.
