You might want ot know just what year RT the shocks were from...
The 2010 year shocks were a bit softer than the later models.
    But they all help!

Noob question. HOW do they improve the ride? More comfort or more performance? Can I simply adjust the preload collars to tighten up the handling?

Great questions and you're in for some great reading. Search this forum for keywords "Elka", "Foxshox", "shocks" or just "suspension". Brew a quart of coffee and have a fun time reading all you ever wanted to know about Spyder suspensions! When you're done with that search on "swaybar".

(They'll stiffen up the front end a bit so that your GS doesn't "heel-over" so far in the turns...)

Default rt shocks on a rs

during spyder fest this year i purchased new take offs from 2012 that were getting elkas

my 2009 rs was very squishy in turns and if you rocked the bike it was very soft even on preload 5

after the rt shocks on preload 3 it was nice and solid almost no front droop in turns

was told since the rt is heavier the shocks are firmer to start with with my over ample self on it i needed more firmness

When fitted to the RS, the RT shocks provide stronger (stiffer) springs, and additional damping. The 2011 and newer versions add even more damping. A lot the "improvement" depends on your current conditions, and what you are trying to accomplish. If your front spring preload is already amxed out, and you still feel you need more spring, you will notice the improvement, and will probably be able to lower the preload setting a bit. Heavier riders or riders that carry a passenger a lot benefit from the stronger springs, too. The damping will help a bit with stability in the wind, and reduce the body roll in the corners. Some folks think the 2011/2012 RT shock damping is a bit much for the RS. If you want to maintain a soft ride, yet reduce body roll in the corners, an aftermarket swaybar may be a better option.
