New law
In Illinois it is illegal to have anything sticking out more than 4" past the bumper. I believe that this is primarily aimed at people who leave the inert in their Reese style hitch. I imagine some of our lawmakers have rapped their shins on some of the hitches and decided that this law was the solution to the problem. They probably sold it as a way to reduce insurance claims for front bumper and and grille insuurance claims.

NY has a hitch law. mines never out of the reese hitch.

If I ever get a ticket for my hitch I will fight it............., All jeep wranglers and many other manufactures mount spare tires to the back of the vehicle and it should be a good case for discrimination. Holly has one mounted on the back of her Jeep liberty.
Firefly will be proud of me.

76 dollars? That is a jacked up specific number for it.
Ever wonder how they arrive on these prices for tickets? Is there a target somewhere with a monkey flinging poo at it and that is the new rate of said ticket. Odd.

I don't need a law to tell me to remove my hitch, and I've got the scars to prove it. But I do resent legislators who think they need to protect me from myself.

Common sense would solve an issue like this. Just wish more people had some. If you bust your own shin, I could care less. It's the people that back into a parking spot with the hitch sticking onto the sidewalk that need to break their own shin on it.

YOu would think that they should know that Common Sense cannot be legislated...

I was stopped at a stoplight and than was thrown forward into the seatbelt with a large crashing sound. Looking in the mirror I see another pickup truck and than think, oh Gawd! I don't want to look. I get out and look at the back of my truck and the only thing damaged is the exhaust extension on the left side. Looking at the truck that hit me, the bumper was pushed in, with the radiator way out of position, pushed back and down to the right side. It was a landscaper towing a trailer that hit me and what saved my truck was my trailer hitch. He said he was going to remove his hitch from his own truck but, after seeing the damage to his boss's truck and none on mine, he changed his mind.
There will be more insurance claims in IL., with most talking on cellphones like this landscaper was when he hit my truck in FL.

Common Sense Obituary (from London Times, 2009):
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
Knowing when to come in out of the rain; accidents may happen; If it ain't broken, don't fix it; why the early bird gets the worm; Life isn't always fair; and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home but the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little on her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife, Discretion, his daughters, Responsibility and Integrity and his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights; I Want It Now; Someone Else Is To Blame and I'm A Victim. Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.
