    Default Parking brake issue - 2012 RS

    When I de-actuate the parking brake pedal, the pedal comes up fast, but the brake pulley releases really slowly. This puts slack in the cable, allowing it to pop off the pulley.

    I removed the pulley and found that the caliper actuator (little stub shaft with the splines) that used to move fairly freely now has very sticky rotation. It's little rubber boot was half way off allowing dirt to get into the mechanism.

    I want to clean and lube it, but I don't know if there is more to removing it than just unscrewing it from the brake assembly. Will small parts with springs come floinging out of that hole if I remove it?

    Also, does something like that require some special exotic hi-temp grease to work in such close proximity to the brakes?

    Nothing about this part is covered in my copy of the service manual.

    You're right, of course. Tomorrow first thing I'll do it.

    I'm probably over thinking it anyway. There's no reason for anything small to be in there if it works the way I think it does.

    Might be a good idea to invest in a service manual, you can buy an online version for around $20.00. Then there will be no limit to what you can do on your Spyder.

    Yeah..... I've had one since day one..... and the parts diagram doesn't single this part out for some reason. Never shows it as being removed from the caliper assembly. Curious....

    Nope. That won't come out unless I remove the brake cylinder itself. Rotating CCW it comes out about a half inch then stops. Being retained by something outboard of the cylinder.

    Sounds expensive to me. Rear caliper : $506.99 ETA: found it for $380 elsewhere. Still......

    BRP considers the brake caliper assembly a non serviceable item. That's why no instructions in the service manual and no individual parts available in the parts catalog. I have not had one apart but I assume the other end of the spline shaft is in the brake fluid, behind the piston. So I would be careful that anything I used to lube it is compatible. Why not screw the shaft out as far as it will go. Clean it with brake clean. Let it dry. Then lube it with brake fluid.

    That is what I did. Seems to be working OK for now, but the rear of the pulley is rubbing on it's spring at the spring retainer point. Maybe that is why the pulley was returning so slowly.

    That can't be right.

    I'm suspecting that the spline shaft and pulley have traveled inboard that far because the pads are about shot, so I ordered a pad kit. I'll have it by this weekend.
